i see stories like this all the time where they claim a person was wielding a Japanese sword or katana, and i often wonder how often it really is a shinken or if its just usually a wall hanger, and what would happen if someone actually tried to use it... hmmm........

Ahh, thats like asking
if the robbers niddle really contains HIV positive blood or not
or the that is a real gun or an immitation.

If you in that situation you treat it as real.
If they did try an use it one of two this would happen
1) they would be looking to get away.
2) they would be looking at beating the target to a pulp

My guess would be that these are mostly wall hangers, but as Martino points out, treat it as if it were "real". Even a wall hanger has got enough point to it to pass through you rather easily.

"The cashier told the ninja that she couldn't get the register open because she was "in the middle of ringing someone up" Haha, honestly wish that would deter all robbers. I find it quite laughable to attempt to rob a convenience store dressed as a ninja with a sword. He could've at least ran out with a big of doritos or jerkey.

i'm not saying treat it as real or not, but i'm curious as to how the journalists are always so sure its a Japaneses sword or katana, i'm not so certain they would know the difference if you stuck 4 or 5 different swords in front of them and asked them to tell the difference.
