Default Earthquake...
Any of our English speaking friends across the Pacific affected by the quake? Definitely praying for you all. (be you a member of the forums or not)

*has a flashback of Kobe in '95*

The news reports show parts of Niigata pretty messed up. Not as bad as October 2004, but still pretty messy.

Over in northern Gifu ken. Felt the Ishikawa quake earlier this year, but didn't feel a thing on the one yesterday. Was pretty surprised to learn about it, since Niigata is only a couple prefectures over, not much farther than Ishikawa.

Takayama doesn't get hit by earthquakes much, does it (it's more flood country).

I've never experienced an earthquake in Japan. I've been lucky, I guess. I hope no-one on here was caught up in this one.

Hit directly? Not so much, but neither do most places, to my knowledge. It's pretty well random. We did have one 4.x that hit while I was living here, centered inside Takayama City I think.

We are, however, very close to the point where all the plates meet up. I think that may be just a little east of here, but it's pretty close if I remember correctly. Though yes, when it's typhoon season (as it is now) we tend to be prone to flooding. The big one that hit three years ago managed to do some serious damage all around the city.

BTW, I like your 文武両道, Oroshi.

Oh, incidentally I was down in Hiroshima when the biggish one hit Kyushu in spring 2005. That was fun. We were in the middle of testing for Japanese classes, and the buildings started shaking. Had to stay an extra day there because the trains got all screwed up and I knew I'd never manage to make it back to Takayama on a free-seat ticket.

Honestly sort of cool. As long as they stay in the 4.x or low 5.x range, they can be kind of fun to ride out.
