Default Kenshikan @ Honolulu
I was in Hawaii recently on personal business, and since I had some time one evening, went to visit Kenshikan Dojo in the Japanese Cultural Center, Honolulu.

Wow - I was very impressed. It's the nicest dojo I've ever seen. The floor looked excellent. They have a separate raised area with tatami floor for iaido (I presume). The dojo was well lit and very well ventilated. The class going on when I visited was doing Kendo no Kata, and everyone seemed to be having fun. The atomosphere didn't feel like martial art school - it was more like parents/elders passing on a tradition to the next generation. It's certainly a blessing to have access to such a nice place.

If any of you get a chance, I highly recommend you stop by & visit.

Thanks for the review, johnkichu! I plan to visit Hawaii again in the near future and Kenshikan has been the first dojo on my list to visit for a while

Is Shigeo Yoshinaga Sensei still teaching?

I didn't get to talk to anyone, as I got there after class started and had to leave before it ended, so I'm not sure who was teaching the night I was there, but his name is listed in the Hawaii Kendo Federation website:

Last time I was there Yoshinaga sensei was still running the class. For a good Hawaii kendo experience the best practice is the Sunday Godo Keiko at Kaimuki. It draws members from all the various Honolulu clubs.

Did you visit on the eve of a weekend day? If so, did they all go out together to go somewhere afterward? On Fridays, my dojo in New York goes to an Irish pub after class is over.

I visited their Friday class (listed with a female sensei on the website mentioned), and from the group I saw, I don't think they went out drinking afterward - many young people and ladies - but I could be wrong. The class was entirely Japanese Americans, except for one.
