As a matter of curiosity, how often do you get a bad bruise in training?
Hm, depends on what we do. We're concentrating on kirikaeshi at the moment, but when we do more jigeiko then I have big bruises everytime. Mostly on the right arm, hand, sometimes also on the right hip bone.

Yesterday our two beginners did kote on bogu for the first time, I have some slight bruises now...

seems to be that it gets better over time. When I began kendo, I used to have welts on my arms and every tsuki was painful. I remember asking my sempai about it, because at the time I was seriously considering quitting over it. Getting hit in the knuclkes (and the subsequent swelling), in the upper ribs, plus the forearm stuff, I wasn damn near throwing in the towel after about a year of it.

but when I asked, they just said 'stick it out, it it'll get better'. And by and large it has. Of course sometimes somebody is bound to lay into us, and it does sometimes leave a mark, but nothing compared to what I used to get when I began. Might the tissue in the affected areas be doing some learning over time, maybe even the nerves?

It's not too bad once people improve. It's just that newer kendoists like myself tend to hit harder.

Sorry guys, back to the topic. Does anyone use bruise or swelling remedies other than (as mentioned above) ice?
YES! Go to your chemist and ask for a HEPARINOID CREAM (not to be confused with hemorrhoid). It comes under brand names like "lasonil".

It speeds up the healing of skin (is wonderful for blisters) and dissolves clotted blood in bruises.

I got a big bruise last night, rubbed some cream in before I went to bed and you can barely see it this morning. It will be gone by tomorrow. My knuckles were black earlier this week and they looked fine in 2 days.

Its a miracle cream!! I should be getting a commission for this...

Just spoke to my brother (he is a physio) he recommended something like that (different brand name) but I think the same active chemical principle. I will look out for it.

Thank you

Aha, found the bruise thread. Here's one from last week (note teeshirt in pic 2!).

After keiko and 24hrs later. A half-arsed tsuki coupled with a harai waza if I remember properly.

Its been nearly a week and I think it is getting worse...

Beer and loads of it.

I have a few sempai who love to whack my kote in such way they have a perfect feeling on finding the bruize under the kote.

then looking at the suprise on their face as the kiai become more ARGH!! after the once again bash the bruize.

Mine kote or not, nothing will protect you against such force.

I've gotten to the point where my right wrist don't seem to bruize or where it seems to take a harder beating to get it to bruize.

Witchhazel is quite good for bruises. The only bugger is having to rub it into the bruise which, depending on how severe the bruising is, can ache like a bastard.

Hirudoid cream for those in Australia It worked a treat on full arm bruising after breaking my humeral head a few years ago - the bruises started at my shoulder (at the fracture site) and started extending down my arm

A Lau Gar buddy of mine recommended this to my dad for a knee injury. It stunk the house out. Do you know what is in that?

Oh come on, it smells better than your dogi. It has various herbs and ground up deer antlers and tiger penises in alchohol.

Actually my dogi smells pretty damn good.

As for DDJ, I was told that part of the mix was bear's bile.
