There are a lot of influences in the english language, IMHO is the reason why is so sophisticated when it comes to putting abstract concepts into words, is a very rich language.

The base for English is German with bits of lots of other languages chucked into the mix. One of the reasons we sometimes have several words (often verbs) meaning the same thing but sometimes with a slight subtle difference. And why some words are spelt the same or are pronounced the same but have different meanings. Confusing eh! But it does allow so much subtlety in the language which is great for the double entendre and, hence, smut!

Oh, and it is the fastest growing language in the world to boot!
