Second, the animal wasn't 'invented' it was bred, just as most of the animals people eat are bred, humans cannot 'invent' animals. Cows and sheep would not look like they do in the wild, they have been selectively bred for certain traits which humans find useful. I find it hypocritical when anyone who eats meat complains about experiments like this as they are essentially eating the product of the same process. At least these scientists aren't eating the frogs but are instead using them to gain an understanding of biology that can save lives, and doing it in a way that means they won't have to kill the frogs to do so.

As a biologist I have had a couple people ask me why we as scientists continue to experiment on animals and then I start to get an earful of how it's inhumane, etc. I then say to them, "then you may as well never got to a hospital, take any OTC drugs, or eat any store bought foods."

On another topic, people cry foul over genetically modified foods but are perfectly content to eat corn bought from a farmer who is growing so-called "organic" corn. First of all, selective breeding is simply a very crude form of genetic modification; selecting particular traits and amplifying them through cross breeding.

In the end, maybe people ought to think about it this way: lab animals are used so that we may find new cures and live longer, healthier lives.

It does seem odd that peoples conscious' get pricked by this issue. it also seems to apply by what we eat. Why do we in the UK and many countries quite happily eat cattle but not eat horses? There is no good reason for permitting dogs to eat horsemeat but not humans - and havind tastes horsemeat abroad I can say that is a bit richer than beef and a bit chewier. And i would happily eat it again. Having said that, if we wish to live in societys that permit free speech we must accept that people will have such conflicting views. I find myself siding with Monsieur Voltaire again.

Would that be in reference to the lady who had her buttock cut off in Candide? Surely if horsemeat is ok, so is a longpork rump steak.....

The issue is that everyone has lines they will not cross in terms of diet, these lines are cultural. Nothing more. In the UK we won't eat horses. Middle east, pigs are a no no. Me, I'm a slowly recovering vegetarian, I was completely veggie, now eat fish. I expect next year I won't be veggie at all as I'm moving to a farm etc (already covered that). I'm under no illusions of how strange it is to say you're veggie and yet eat fish. That's up to me, but for the sake of ease, if someone offers me a hot dog I'd say no thanks I'm a vegetarian. If it was fish and chips I'd say great, love some thanks. Tell someone you're a piscatarian and they look at you like you're weird, so for me at least it's just a simple short hand. I'm quite happy to admit I'm not a real vegetarian anymore.

Similar cultural issues go alongside animal experimentation too, and human fertilization study also.

Not a confused rant. I'm not trying to defend my position it's a weird one. For health reasons I had to start eating fish. I'm also unlikely to remain a vegetarian/piscatarian in the future. Just not interested in eating hamburgers right now really.
