Stunning stuff. I was hoping for more talk on more immediate technologies such as real-time raytracing (you think water and light are cool now, just wait till we get the computing power to make use of some of this stuff). But definitely, more kinetic systems of gameplay are the future, as seen in the Wii.

Granted, the level of kinetics might reach levels of The Matrix, but hey, what can you do.

I'm decently sure the implanting of identifiable computing is going to raise some privacy concerns. Already, there's a good score of people avoiding buying instant-pass toll buttons that automatically charge bridge fair to your account (and let you not stop at a toll booth) because they contain RFID tags.

Also, being a CS student, I sure as hell am not letting anyone implant devices with buggy firmware into my head. I'd be one buffer-overflow from a coma .

Very cool stuff though!

I love the small remark about mobile entertainment: "kids need something to do on car trips or in detention. Both groups tend to be avid non-readers".

Mandalorian armor, please

My favorite part of the article;

We don’t want to come off as cynical here, but those of us who were playing a Sega Genesis back in 1992 dreamed of the kind of consoles we’d have 15 years later. Not many of us were anticipating that some of the most popular titles of the wondrous future would be shitty games sold at Burger King. Aint it the truth.

I think I was playing Valis III on the Sega Genesis.

"Make-an-awesome-Photoshop-of-it" phase of development. Isn't that the truth.

Hoepfully the games will be able to be played full-resolution on a standard PC without having to buy a GPU that is the same price as the PC!

Interesting article. What struck me as surprising was the part about drawing the images directlyon your eye. I remember reading about that being used in the Swedish Airforce 3-5 years ago. But then, maybe they are talking about a bit more sophisticated variant (i.e. images and not just a laser drawn HUD)

Lots of cool technology around the corner. I want to play!

I realy feel that this is actually horrible. Its just going to cause more people to spend countless hours in imaginary worlds, doing nothing productive.

Its realy sad.

I mean playing video games a few hours a week, OK, but forever, as they claim. That could end up being realy bad.

Is kendo really productive? Video games are just another form of entertainment. You can speak about improving oneself, but kendo is useless.

Think of the bright side;
While everyone is locked in a VR world, you'll have all the nature parks to yourself!

yea but since everyone that takes care of the parks will be in that VR world it will probably just be a barren waste land :P

Realy?

I guess staying healthy, in shape, strong, and mentally sharp are totally useless. And some entertainment as well. Also, character building, and life lessons. Video games realy dont do either.

Nobody is saying entertainment is bad. But total and utter immersion into a game world?
