I went golfing yesterday for the first time this season, and the first time since I started Kendo two months ago.
Wow. Kendo was really helpful. I had better balance and "golf swing tenouchi"; but mostly, I was just much more focused. Ultimately I didn't score particularly well because I'm out of practice and missed some easy putts, but I was surprised to find the cross-training useful at all. I actually thought it would mess up my golf swing and I think it did the opposite. Anyone else had a similar experience? With golf? Or another non MA sport? |

I think it has definitely made my golf better, and i think they translate well. Many of my analogies here on the KW are golf analogies.
That said, I am still terrible at golf.....short game issues. My sensei has given me many stories about him as a japanese kid in the US with no previous sports training becoming rather proficient in them due to kendo. His favorite story is baseball...he said his kendo grip and such really helped him to become a great batter. He also said he got quite good at golf. He is a phenomenal guy, but sometimes i question the 'embelishment' our older generations' stories. |

I play a pretty good game of golf and I find that I have the same mindset when playing golf as the one I have when doing kendo!! I'm concentrating on a single goal and thats all that matters! I tend to not have tenouchi when playing golf because it constricts my grip causing a fade!
But hey, the greatest distance in golf is the one between your ears!! |
