Default How are our friends from Chile?
Hello everyone,
Just wanted to touch base with our friends from Chile, as there has reportedly been a rather large Volcanic eruption near the village of Chaiten.
Not sure exactly where that is, but is everyone ok?

wow Ive never imagine that someone would know....

well, things are starting to look ugly really. personally I live in the center part of chile and the volcano is on the south so I really dont have any problems with that (yet, hopefully winds dont change). as fad as I know until now 1 person has died becouse of the volcano, not by it itself, it was becouse she was an old lady and she just couldnt stand all the evacuation thing and the cold...

it has been really really sad. yesterday all the temaining people living near of the area of the volcano where evacuated, but in the south, especially in those small places, people are very poor, and they live out of agriculture and working with in their lands. so those people left with the false promess of comming back. the real part is that in those lands nothing is going to grow in many years from now. and most of those people dont have nowhere else to go. besides all animals had to stay in chaiten, and they where left to die there. and many people live out of those animals, for instance you could see in the news, people staying in chaiten to take care of a couple of cows, and two o tree horses I.E. people risking their lives to aviud a couple of animals from dying becouise those animals is their thin line away from total poverty...

it might sound cold but, things like this could happen here or to anyone, we just have to find out the best way of dealig with it.

anyway, its weird for me to reda the headline of the news you linked it says "amazing pictures" and thats completely away from the reality. the important part isnt the "amazing pictures" its the human drama of people leaving their home in to an uncertain future... the news is like "check this pictures, are incredible and the piroclastic cloud and bla bla bla, and oh yes btw, some people where evacuted and stuff..." the truth is said, around here noone gives a damn about the "amazing pictures"

I apologize for that link.
It's the Daily Mail, which equals Ragged, sensationalist hype.
I should have known better.

Better.

Cyclone in Myanmar, eruption in Chile...we pissing off Mother Earth again? Is it just me, or does it seem like we're getting more clusters of natural disasters these days?

Not meaning to sound flippant, just making an observation.

I hope that the casualty count doesn't go up too much, and that those people can find a way to rebuild their lives.

That's why I still consider myself lucky to be in the states, even though things are not as good as it could be.

Ooooh, don´t try to come as a hard guy, we all know that inside you're nothing more than a furry, little, sensitive squirrel...

(well, maybe not so little...)

Yeah, we've been eatin' too much Parkay Margarine...

Seriously: with Kilauea going full crank out here and spewing tons of volcanic haze (sulphur dioxide) into the atmosphere, it's no picnic on Planet Earth these days!

Your kind words much appreciated again, Kenzan-san! And the kendo & iaido in Hawaii is, in a semi-biased word... AWESOME!

You'll be right at home, sempai!

Mark

PS: is our beloved Lady Kitsune affected by the Chilean volcanic activity in any way?

According to her Facebook profile, she's in Santiago, which is a good bit north of Chaitén. Hopefully she's far enough away to not be affected...

psssht... we pay $1.90 per litre (about $9.40US per gallon) and ~$3 per litre ($14.82US per gallon) for milk, and I'm sure NZ isn't as bad as many countries.

Quit whinging, Hawaii here I come!

I think the Volcano in Chaiten and the horrific scenes in Burma (Myanmar) serve to remind us exactly who is in charge of this planet.

We are merely guests on it and as such we should remember to behave properly and accord our hostess with all due courtesy - not sure we do that.

But I am pleased to know that the Chilean authorities ( and the Southern Argentinian ones?) have been able to succesfully use their contingency plans and save a lot of lives. I guess it must be very strange for you guys to know that there is a monumental disaster happening in your own country but because your country is so big you are only 'aware' of it through the media.

I was watching stuff about the Burmese cyclone and felt truly depressed after learning that the Government there are rejecting humanitarian aid from certain countries. Thousands of their people dead, thousands more suffering unbelievable suffering and all they can think of is f**king stupid political posturing.

This fruity one is not a happy chap
