Ever try it? It is the nastiest thing I have ever tasted. Surely natto is like eating lemonade sparkles by comparison, not that I would try natto either.
I can see why Greenpeace is trying to get the Japanese from fishing for Minke whales. Not to save the whale but to get that shit off the world's butchers' slabs. |

Well ... I'd say there's a reason the sashimi form of it is highly regarded. Still, I'd feel pretty guilty about seeking it out nowadays. Some discussion from another forum:

i got tricked into eating whale sashimi early on by a kendo sensei. He was all casual like 'do you like fish?' eyeing it skeptically i ax what is it and he goes into high gear like 'eat it eat it eaditeaditeaditeadit' and he waits until i swallow then points at my stomach and yells 'WHALE!'.
my brain made me feel ill but i have to say the taste was nondescript. |

Whale ....... can`t comment, will let you know when I get around I've been fed it raw, dried, deep fried... (not as jerky though - that sounds bad). Oh, those tasty, tasty whales... Raw chicken is better though. |

I wouldn't eat the stuff (don't eat mammals anyway)....
Anyhoo, my Japanese teacher said that one of his first business visits over there, the dirty bastards got him and his associates eating whale cum.... which begs the question... how in the shit do they get the stuff???!!! I'm picturing a couple of hefty Japanese dudes really going to town, like grabbing on and going for a bungee run, to give one lucky whale his jollies before they slice him up. |

I did try, what I believe was fugu shashimi at a kindergarten staff party! Was good! Oh well, still around here so maybe will get lucky and have someone force it on me lol! |

I ate it a couple times back in high school. I went to a state boarding school back in Alaska for two years, and some of the other students would get "care packages" from home, one guy would always get some muktuk (whale blubber) and caribou.
Nothing like a chunk of frozen raw whale blubber with a slice of frozen raw caribou wrapped around it. Quite yummy compared to other regional foods, such as fermented salmon eggs or stink head. -Charles |
