I don't like most martial arts because, uh, as strange as it sounds, I don't like to hurt people.
When I can't get to the dojo, I practice... or clean my apartment, which always needs cleaning. Actually, a couple of nights ago when I didn't have practice at the dojo, I spent some time washing my keikogi in the bathtub. It was amazing how much more it weighed soaking wet! Joke: I sit around watching "movies" and "practicing my grip" while doing "katate suburi" very quickly. |

I like kendo and I like tai chi but the other martial arts I have done previously don't really hold much interest for me.
I typically don't have to worry about looking for stuff to do when I am not doing kendo as there aren't enough hours in a day to get all the stuff done I want/need to get done already..lol Mostly it is work, family, work around the house, work on kendo web pages for the SEUSKF, TKI or UNC, going to hockey games, partying with the neighbors and friends, video games, and that leaves sleeping mostly. ![]() |

Funny, I'm not a particularly sports oriented person, I'm more of the geeky kind... but looking back I see I mostly filled my time over the last few years with Kendo and sports (and computer/videogames too). First it was basic riding for showjumping, then changed to classic dressage, then stopped, then went into rowing and gym work, which is where I am now. If I were in a half-decent place I'd have taken up modern pentathlon this year.
From time to time I develop a different interest in things as diverse as document restoration and showjumping course design. Then I take a course or seminar and drop it for time issues. My current obsession is Kendo fora and webpages (doing my own, see sig.) Also, as I'm still in college, there's ALWAYS more studying/reading to do. And then there's all the extra stuff I read to fill my time... That's about it. I still get bored sometimes though. |

In my spare time hmmm...
One thing I love to do is practice piano and write short little pieces of piano music (a few pieces here: www.myspace.com/chrisrihn ) I love to watch foreign films and comedies. I listen to public radio. I try to keep up with the country and the economic disaster and what not. I love boogie boarding. I live about 2 minutes from the water in Palm Beach Gardens, FL, so I always go out to the beach with my buddy Carl. We have known each other since about 1/2 a year old. We are 22/23 now. Nothing is more fun than catching a huge wave and riding it in. I go to college, I am getting my AA this semester, and moving to Miami in January to start at FIU. I play a computer version of dance dance revolution called Stepmania with my fingers. I play some FPS' and non-addicting MMO's (NO I DONT PLAY WoW). I hang out with my girlfriend, plus she gives me an extra reason to cook. I like experimenting with foods that my family thinks are unconventional or not normally eaten in our family and then getting them to try it. I love playing my PS2 and Super nintendo which i keep hooked up to this day. I like photography, I have a canon rebel XT which has been pretty fun to shoot around with. I like going to museums and musical performances. I like being downtown palm beach just walking around the city. then of course, the unfun stuff like cleaning and worrying about rent and getting my next paychecks to pay off my bills. But who cares about that stuff ;] That was a nice little ramble for me, and now you all know basically ALL of the things I am into/do =p |

Married & 2 kids keeps me pretty busy. I'm in the judo dojo 2 nights/week and kendo twice. For downtime, we watch TV and hit movies when we can. I like to read, mostly sf. I golf a little, skateboard a little, go on the odd snowboarding trip, noodle around on piano and guitar. My family's mostly in town and we have lots of friends so there's social stuff happening quite a lot. Currently planning my mom's 75th birthday do.

You must have an understanding wife to get way four nights a week for martial arts. I have three kids myself and it's taken me seven years to convince the wife to let me have two nights a week to start Kendo again. Any other time, I play chauffeur for my kids. I swear, kids these days do more stuff that I ever did as a child. When I was growing up, I walk to school and walked home. After school, I ran around the neighborhood with my friends until just before my parents got home. Kids these days are driven everywhere to their activities. There's probably some pretty interesting sociological research on modern society and how busy we keep our kids and being helicopter parents and whatnot, but I don't have time to read it. ![]() |
