Q: How do you say: "Suddenly I feel very old" in Klingon? (Translation: I cut my fingers chopping onions last night so it's hard to type with bandaids on my fingers... so "Nice quote there, Kenzan-san!" ![]() |

I really love Star Trek. I'm not sure if I chose to study space engineering because of Star Trek or if I like Star Trek because of my interesst in space engineering. That said this movie will probably suck really, really bad. The trailer is too much main-stream action for my taste. They are probably just trying to get the kids hooked onto the franchaise so they can sell worthless stuff instead of beeing true to the tv-series or previous movies. The whole concept of a prequel sucks both since prequels usally do and since they won't be able to replicate the the feeling of pre dating TOS, much like the so called "Star Wars" movies that have been coming out lately. That said having Kirk as the main character is exceptionally bad since he did everything by the book while in the academy. His ego/sex-drive didn't kick in until much later. So they can either make him boring or inaccurate. That's a real win-win situation. So to sum things up; I will probably only watch it ONCE, on the opening day.

I haven't watched the original series in quite some time but I seem to recall Kirk, that dirty dog, enthusiastically rubbing up against everything female in the galaxy (sorry, jealousy shining through). Plus, in his Academy days, he pulled his Kobayashi Maru stunt. So it might not be too big a stretch to see signs of that in his youth as well? Anyway, the movie does look to be more mainstream but I think that's a good thing. The franchise needs to do that or pretty much fade away (which, to me, would be very sad). Plus, Spock has always been #1 in my book so I'm really looking forward to seeing a story about Spock's formative years. Not to mention how entertaining it will be to see him unleash a half-Vulcan smack-down!

After all, did you notice how shiny and new and MODERN everything looks on the Enterprise in the movie trailer versus how low-budget everything looked in ST:TOS??? Prequels do suck until they capture the look & feel of TOS. All in all, I'll probably go and watch it once. If it really tanks in the box office, I'll wait for the Netflix... ![]() |
