Default Kendo, Taiwan to San Diego
I just wanted to introduce myself to the folks here. It looks like a great forum you have going here. I am brand new to kendo. I have had just two classes here in San Diego. I first saw kendo when I was in kindergarden back in Japan in 1963. I had always wanted to practice but never got around to it. I lived in Taiwan for 15 years and saw kendo there all the time. Taiwan was a Japanese colony for 50 years and both judo and kendo are strong in Taiwan. I had been doing judo here in San Diego for about 9 months and finally got going on the kendo just two weeks ago.

When I lived in Taiwan my wife and I wrote a book on Chinese martial arts history that is titled "Chinese Martial Arts Training Manuals: A Historical Survey" and we have another one coming out in June, its also on Chinese martial arts history.

I look forward to talking with folks here about different aspects of kendo. The classes I am taking are at the Taiwan Community Center, the Sensei is Fredrick Lin. He seems to be a great guy. I like him alot.

take care,
Brian

Hi!

Welcome to the forum!

I'm glad you are enjoying kendo so far! And wow, I never knew that dojo existed. It's nice to know!

I think you'll find a lot of useful information here, but remember to always ask your sensei first, to make sure you do things correctly.

Good luck and enjoy the forum!

Kaoru

Happy Easter, thanks Kaoru. I appreciate that. And yes, I know to turn first to my sensei for advice and to use the forums to get other views or just to make friends in kendo. I know the old maxim, "one dojo, one sensei".

take care,
Brian

Welcome! Were you based in Taipei or down south previously?

If you ever get a chance to visit Taiwan again you should try to take your bogu and join a few classes. As I am sure you already know, the Taiwanese people are in general very very friendly and welcoming. Even more so for the kendo population - most dojos would be more than happy to have guests.

Hi Kanyil,
We lived in San Chung City (三重市) which is just across the river from Taipei. And yes, for sure next time I get back to Taiwan I will go around and visit the Kendo dojo. And you are right too, Taiwanese people are super friendly (my wife is Taiwanese!). I see you live in Hong Kong now but where were you from in Taiwan?

take care,
Brian

Hi Brian,

I used to live in Taipei, near the old financial district (Ming Sheng E. Road / Tun Hwa N. Road). I am not too familiar with San Chung City as I have always been a city boy :P However, if you get a chance you should try to visit Shudokan (修道館)(near the CKS Memorial Hall), Taipei Dojo (台北道館)(near Longshan Temple) and/or Songshan Dojo (松山劍道館)(near Songshan Airport). You should be able to find their address and training schedules online.

Cheers,

Hi Jefe,
I very much agree. Even though I have only been with him a short time, the qualities you mention are obvious. I was very lucky to find him and to get involved in kendo. I should mention too that the senior guys seem real nice too.

take care,
Brian
