I appreciate the cinematography and editing of that trailer but, come on now, isn't there just a tad of over-the-top sentiment in the taglines? Who feels they are a Master of Technique ever, let alone at 3-dan, then feel they've arrived at the Gateway to Perfection at 4-dan? Wonder what the 5-dan sequel will reveal.

The way I interpreted the dan titles is that 4th dan isn't perfection, it's just the start of the path to perfection. I mean, it says it opens the gate, not that you're a perfect master. In any case, I'm certainly willing to forgive it for dramatic license. I mean, it's not like there aren't movies out there that have done worse.
It's a bit strange that it claims to be the first fictional kendo film, though. Any other judgment on my part will have to wait til I see the full thing. |

I thought it was well made. I liked the old man's line:
"Go play swords." I thought the phantom looked intimidating, which... takes some doing for kendo people, I think. Did have to turn off the kendo part of my brain a bit, though, oddly enough. Like, don't there have to be seven people on a 4th dan grading panel? (Or is that just here) |
