Default A question about Japanese culture
I recently met a very nice Japanese woman at my boyfriend's Kendo class who moved from Japan to the US a couple months ago. I commented on some really cute socks she was wearing, and the next thing I know, she gives me this beautifully bagged gift that contains a pair of the socks that she had gone and bought for me. I don't know much about Japanese culture... well.. I know nothing at all about it really... but I think gift giving is a big deal there. I like this woman, and want to become friends with her. I also want to learn more about her culture. I was shocked and very delighted that she would go out of her way to get me the socks, and I want to do something for her, but I thought it would be even better if I could express my appreciation by doing things the Japanese way. Please help!!! I've looked online for insight, but am finding confusing articles. Could someone please tell me how to properly show my appreciation to my new friend that would be in keeping with her culture? What kind of gift should I get her, and how should I present it?

Typically, when you receive a gift in Japan, it's a good idea to reciprocate with something of generally equal value at some point. It works basically the same way as it does in America, in that respect. You could invite her to a home-cooked American-style meal or something.

hmm well my opinion, which is worth two cents, is to be yourself and respond to her generosity as you would to any other person. I know with my wife it got old to her that people would respond to her generosity in some sort of Japanese way. Pretty much she's in America & I'm betting, like my wife when she first arrived, will be interested in thing about the US she doesn't know or understand. I remember when a lady took my wife to eat at a unique BBQ Shack with southern style BBQ Ribs--the happiness on her face was priceless!

As for being friends, just be friends as you would with anyone else. ^_^

I know little to nothing about Japanese culture, But I would say just be yourself, She has found an interest in you as you have found an interest in her, Be her "american" friend You can both learn each others culture that way.

I generally find that after I give someone a gift they punch me directly in the face, and they leave with a very happy look. I would suggest letting her slap you upside the chops and see the delight.

You could save quite a bit of time and money by simply allowing everyone the opportunity to punch you in the face..........
Wear a badge that invites such action.......

Surely it is better to please many rather than the few to whom you give gifts.........??

It would perhaps be more beneficial for the woman if she were allowed to punch YOU directly in the face!
