I like the comments in the "info" bit!!

OMG!! I just worry that this is what Joe Public will think this is iaido?!

I also worry friends/relatives think this is what I do!!

See if you can watch the whole video without cringeing!

They have a website: http://www.asheborokenjutsu.com/

I particularly love this quote: "Students are not allowed to draw or re-sheath shinken (sharp sword) until Lesson 10, roughly 6 months. Iaito, (unsharpened sword) are to be used until then."

Don't know whether to laugh or cry . . . . . or both . .

Horseplay or "pretend fighting" are not allowed in our school. Weapons are serious business and should be treated as such. They seem legit.

The guy in that video has been discussed on here before (under the "Flames" section). He even joined KW briefly in an attempt to defend himself and spread his swordsmanship. It was epic fail (on his part). But seeing this video never ceases to make me cringe...

BTW, I love all the twirling he does with the katana....classic

OMG!! how can he call that "kenjutsu/iaido"?? no footwork, no body balance, no beauty and I believe he often swung the "katana" using his right hand only even when he grab the katana using 2 hands. LOL

Yep the guy is a definite loony with no clue at all. However, I would like to discuss this statement from David ...
OMG!! I just worry that this is what Joe Public will think this is iaido?!
I also worry friends/relatives think this is what I do!! Why do you worry? I hear a lot of people say this, and have never been able to understand it. Perhaps you could put it into simple enough terms that my peabrain can finally get it sorted out and understand why it matters what Joe Public or friends/relatives/other non-practitioners think that it is you do?

Sorry, it just makes me curious.

No worries.

If they know what I actually do and think it: daft/a waste of time/pointless etc that's their view - nothing I can do about it or be worried about. If people want to take the p*ss then that's their problem not mine.

However if they think what that guy does is what I do I would be concerned.

I enjoy iaido immensely and would hope others would see what it actually is and want to take it up themselves, not think it's just a load of ninjer wannabees!

Does that make sense now?

In that case I'm glad I'm a dancer.

They seem legit.
They've gotta be. They have their own theme music (scroll down to the bottom of their website). Every good iaido/kenjutsu dojo should have some...*cue theme song from Shaft*

I think I will wear shorts, tee and trainers (sneekers) to practice from now on . . .

Can't believe that guy is using a shinken . . . .

I know I've taken the p*ss a bit, but genuinely worried about someone getting seriously hurt.

The youtube description of "And as far as my form goes - this training area alone presents you with 4 types of terrain to walk" just solidifies an image of Billy Mays or Vince from Shamwow selling me Iaido.

It would be quite epic to see that indeed.

Does that make sense now? Mmmmm ... not really. I've got a friend that studies modern dance. I've no idea what that is really. I'm sure I could go on youtube and find all sorts of wacky stuff labelled dance. However, if I get curious about what she really does, I think I'd just ask her instead. So, are you saying that you're worried that your friends won't ask you just what it is that you do? Surely if one of them looked at this video, they'd realize that this is not you?

Yes and stop calling me Shirley!

Am I very worried - no.

Am I concerned that the world at large, including people who know me think that is iaido - yes. They can see it's not me; and if they want to know about it properly they can ask.

I feel especially sorry that "students" of this muppet think what they do is iaido.

Am I going to lose any sleep over it? No.

I would LOVE to see Vince trying to sell us Iaido. It would at least be entertaining!

Actually, they think their learning kenjutsu! One day when they're truly ready (somewhere between lesson 4 and 5 which is about three weeks) The "Wall of Steel" Combat-Knife Form

Awesome!!!!

Am I concerned that the world at large, including people who know me think that is iaido - yes. This is the part that I don't really get. Why is it a concern? I'm sure the vast majority of people think that what we do is what they've seen on Kill Bill and Highlander. Yep, about as realistic as that fellow's stuff. This doesn't concern me at all, and doesn't affect my practice in the least. It does seem to bother a lot of people though, and that's what I've never really been able to understand.

Ok fair enough. That's how the conversation usually ends when I ask about it, which I suppose is why I still don't get it. Perhaps it's just one of those things that can't be explained?
