Default Sword display?
Hey folks my wife has allowed me (can you tell I'm whipped) to turn our spare room into a man cave. I would like to display my collection of swords on one wall but want to make it both tasteful as well as secure (I have a 4 year old boy). Could you guys offer me an suggestions or place a picture of their display?

thanks,

I looked around for a nice wall rack myself just recently, but wasn't happy with what I could get for the money. So, being a designer, I drew one up and had a woodworker build it up for me. It doesn't have any security features, but is placed high enough on the wall where a 4-year-old wouldn't have a chance of getting at it.

Seven sword capacity, South African bloodwood.

To paraphrase from the Joke of the day thread

Good.
I have a 4 year old boy

Bad
Trouble is a 4 year old boy becomes a 6 year old boy who can climb on chairs.

Ugly
Then a 6 year old boy becomes a 11-13 year old boy who watches Ninja movies and decides he is Jet Li/Toshiro Mifune/Tom Cruise or even worse Steven Segal and thinks "Dad has that gear in the spare room!!"

No, no, no ... it should go ...

Good: You got a new sword display put up.
Bad: Your pre-teen son is waving one of your swords around.
Ugly: He looks better than you did at your last shinsa.

For the original poster:
If you have small children that you worry about them getting hold of your swords, do NOT put them up on display. Keep them locked in a gun cabinet.

My little brother had a kid about a month back. Now I'm waiting for the little bugger to start walking, investigate the big set of blue armour on the wall, get his hands on a himo and pull the men off the wall.

Heavy bastard will fall visor-first, straight downwards. Children and budo gear are not a good mix.

...Oh Christ, what if I come in one day and he's drawn all over it in crayon? OR PAINT?

Thanks guys, I like Brians ideas best. Any idea on how to arrange them I have the following. How much did you pay for your display Brian?

3 katana (Japanese curved sword)

1 wakizashi (small Japanese sword)

1 gim (Chinese straight sword)

1 Dao (Chinese cavalry sword)

1 two handed gim (Chinese long sword)

1 Scottish claymore

1 Scottish basket hilt claymore

1 two handed Spanish sword

2 Indian punch daggers

2 Chinese butterfly knives

1 Pudao (Chinese Halberd)

They will be above a lit display cabinet with helmets and a couch in front of it.

Any suggestions?

My rack was only $75 or so, and that's with imported hardwood. I think I lucked out; it's hard to get even the more typical laminated pressboard crud for that price.

I really think what's missing here is a display table of the severed heads you've taken.
I recommend using Dildonian Copralite for the table.
Personally, I'd hollow one out, fill it with ice and keep my beer in it.

that would stink up your enjoyment of bev of choice. it's would be better to keep your take alive, fed, and bathed well so they can fetch the beer for you and keep it cool in ice box near your tv.

Run a hot wire around the swords so junior gets a jolt every time he touches them.

It's all about classical conditioning!

... I'm going back to studying for my psych exam at 8:30

Does this spare room have a door?

If so, then there's this handy thing called a lock...I might look into it if I were you.
