I still don't like his doh. As an aside, what does "hatsugeiko" mean?
No problem with not liking his do. Insulting his kendo and his character based on one still photograph is what I found ridiculous.

Hatsugeiko means "first keiko of the year." In this case it was a big event held at the start of January where a couple of hundred schoolkids did kihon with the sensei, followed by kendo kata, iaido and jodo demonstrations and some model shiai.

Thanks. My sensei calls that "keiko hajime", maybe he's just simplifying for us.

Hmmm don't wanna wade in here but his left hand albeit in transition, does look a bit like throttling...something. Could flowers be plum blossoms, and the gentleman is paying tribute to the traditional, auspicious "Three Friends" which may be the pine, plum and...
help! Could the red squiggles near the L. elbow be phoenix plumes? Awesome.

Nah, they're just two terms that mean basically the same thing. Anything that's the first of the year is given a "hatsu" prefix. First snow of the year, for example is "hatsu yuki". First Sumo tournament is "Hatsu Basho". At the same time, the first day back to work is "Shigoto hajime". "Hatsugeiko" literately means "first practice (of the year)", while the sense of "Keiko hajime" is "The beginning of (this year's) keiko."

FWIW, in the Yagyu-kai, we use "keiko hajime".

The fact that Mr Taniguchi is wearing a two sizes too big men and holding the shinai like he is strangling a chicken, gives a fairly good steer on who wears fancy bogu.
