Default Sports Coaching Courses for Instructors?
Hi

Probably more a question for Martial Artists from Australia, but has anybody done any of the courses in Sports Coaching (specialising in Martial Arts) that some RTOs offer? If so did you find the course very useful? I'm considering doing one of these but given the cost and the fact that I haven't seen many instructors advertise "certificate IV in sports coaching specialising in Martial Arts" under their qualifications and experience I'm wondering whether it's worth it. Any info would be great. Thanks

What is an RTO?

I presume you are in NSW? Here it seems to be a scam whereby at some point, they convinced the State Government that they were the arbiters of training etc. Now it's impossible to get a venue without insurance and most insurance for MA is sold by these groups.

Of course, you have to go through their training courses to get the insurance at a "Discount".

It stinks.

There is some info on Instructor accreditation here

An RTO is a "Registered Training Organisation".

Cutie_honey, your link doesn't work for me ( Internet Explorer says it can't display the page).
Unfortunately I don't study kendo, I'm an Aikidoist with an interest in other arts. I don't think there's really an Aikido equivalent to the Australian Kendo Renmei. Although you do raise a rather good point, I should really speak to the people in charge of my style. I'm quite keenly interested in eventually instructing in my art and now that I'm Shodan I'd like to start making some steps towards that.

The sensei at my old dojo never mentioned anything about getting a certificate II/III/IV before he started instructed, only a lot of training. I'm leaning towards thinking this course is a waste of money better spent on other things. Maro, do you know if your situation is the same with most other Martial Arts?

I would take a godan+ as a far more credible instructor than any government "accredited" instructor anyday.

I believe the AKR isn't affiliated with any other of those martial arts organizations floating around since it provides members insurance and stuff, might wanna wait for a more qualified response though.

Yes, this only relates to Kendo, iaido and jodo but since this was on a kendo forum i just assumed thats what you were enquiring about.

It would definitely be worthwhile checking with the Naitional Aikido assocication if there is one
