Default 2011 is upon us;- any resolutions????
Most New Year resolutions are broken within about a month.

Do you have any that you think you MIGHT be able to uphold.

Mine;
Stop smoking [again]
Drink less alcohol
Offset the problems of an ageing body by becoming fitter/stronger;
Keep training toward my next Iaido grading [October 2011 - first opportunity]
Start training toward my next Jodo grading [4th Dan; achieved 3rd Dan 6 years ago]

Become more tolerant [this is the one that will be lost sooner than any of the above....]

Not a resolution as such but there is a line in an anime that I like:

"Stronger than I was yesterday!"

Which is going to be my motto for the year. It doesn't just refer to physical strength.

I'm going to lose four stone, and become a triathlete, learn two languages, pay more attention to my relationship, win the lottery and build a huge dojo with a sumptuous oak floor which will be free to use for any Iaidoka in the UK and foster love, harmony and understanding between all faiths creeds and culture.

No I haven't bothered with NY resolutions for years and I'm sure they've been shown to be the most likely resolutions to be broken.

With regards smoking cessation Bill, do go to your GP for support since this has been shown to be more effective than doing it alone- just reading the smoking cessation leaflets in your GP practise increases success rates by 15%! Be aware and accept you will relapse a few times before kicking the habit-its par for the course. My sincere best wishes for this endeavour.

Getting back to the Dojo!

Finally been able to get myself a car, settle down with reasonably good job(s) in freelance and teaching (tutoring SES cadets for their drill quality, and the AAFC for aviation), and I have one more year at Uni with my Bachelors degree in Computer Science.

So, starting tomorrow - I hope to make a good return properly this time.

P.S A Happy New Year to everyone as well.

Interesting that you say this because apparently, fifty-five percent of Americans keep their New Year’s resolutions for one month, 40 percent for six months, and 19 percent for two years.

My new year's resolution is along similar lines - but I like to quantify things. So my goal is do some suburi every day, with the added rule that however many I do, I *MUST* do ten more than I did yesterday. I started with 10 on the 1st, 20 on the second, will do 30 today etc....

I hope to keep this up until the end of the year, although that means on new year's eve I'll be doing a minimum of 3650 suburi... Let's see how far I can get!

-Going to reach Nikyu by the end of the year.
-I would put "lose weight" but that's been an ongoing goal (which is actually going rather well!)
-Pay off some bills...

Last year I fulfilled my resolutions. They were:
-Purchase my Bogu
-Do more Kendo
I'm pretty confident I can do these resolutions.

Good luck to everyone else!

No resolutions, but a few goals:

- get enough of my kids' class into bogu so we can have a kids' division at our seminar tournament
- pass my Judo shodan
- run my 1st marathon
- sub-45 10k, sub-1:40 half-marathon

1) Begin Iai.
2) Run More.
3) Do more Keiko.
Other than these, I'm perfect in every concievable way and feel no need to change. Just kidding. Oh, how I wish that was true...

finish my book.
work less.
practise more iai.
buy a new sword (before my wife spends all my cash on grandkids)
get myself over to Japan.
keep my promise about teaching in Spain and Poland.
sort out the final points for this years big seminar.
make sure I get to all seminars the club has in UK.

The bigger the list, the more chance I have of succeeding at maybe one of them....

Yeah good luck with that.
Chiba does 4000 continuous suburi a day, and he's an old man. I think if I build up to it slowly, it shouldn't be a problem... right?

I guess the only thing that I would ask is what you plan on getting out of doing so many suburi. Is it just a pride thing to allow you to say that you were able to build up to that amount at once? Is this to improve your strikes? It's a pretty lofty goal to get to, but the hardest part is knowing what's supposed to be at the end of the road.

Now, as for my resolutions, I don't really have much in terms of my Kendo and Iaido practice, but I did just post stuff on my blog (link below) about what I would like to do for this year based off of what's planned.

For everything else, however:
  • Create a budget: I felt that I was starting to lose sight of my finances, so I thought I would make a budget so I can see where things are going and also pay off my student loans and credit card bills. I was able to set up a budget that can allow me to do that, but also offers the flexibility to make changes when needed.
  • Complete some goals I started: I have many anime that I still need to watch, manga to read, many games I need to play, Gundam models to build and things to clean. I tend to put it all off, but I would really like to get them done. I guess I just need to have a more directed approach to doing these things.
  • Become a better blogger: I really like to blog about my Kendo and Iaido experiences but I would like to be able to convey my ideas in a better fashion and try to do more with my blog. Unfortunately, I don't really know where to begin with that since my web development skills are pretty low.

My Kendo orientated resolution for this year is to put 100% in at training as long as I'm physically fit in order to be a good role model for the new batch of beginners my club's taking in.

I'm hoping it'll teach me to stay relaxed when I cut. When I get tired during practice I tense up - I'd like to try and fix that. If it gets too difficult I'll probably stop increasing it, but the thought behind it was "If I did 1000 yesterday, I can do 1000 today. And then when I've done that, I can do just ten more."

I know it's a ridiculous number to aim for, but it's not so much the final target as what I'll (hopefully) learn along the way. If nothing else, my suburi should improve.
