Default Hallo'ween
I'm sure this has been asked like 20 times already, but I can't find this exact question :

Is it acceptable to wear anything kendo-related outside of the dojo? Particularly on Hallowe'en. Hell, if it is, it'll be the most realistic and coolest costume.

[Speaking of which, my friend is going as a sleeping bag. Friggin' awesome. o_O]

[Edit]: Spelled "Hallowe'en" wrong in the title.

You'd have to put a skull mask in the men for it to be acceptable.

I'm grading on Halloween-I wonder if that's inauspicious?

If your intent is to go as a kendoka then yes, I agree it would be the most realistic costume you could wear. If you wish to go as a ghoul or a spook, then not so much.

I think wearing kendo gear for Hallowe'en is kind of a cop out. Most likely the folks who know you might know your interest in kendo and just go 'oh yeah, your wearing your kendo gear, forget it already we've heard enough about kendo and boy doesn't it stink!'

Trick or Treat!

It'll be like going as a hockey player. In your hockey gear. Except, depending on your demographic, you won't either be able to eat any candy through the mengane, or drink beer. And vomit will stain the futon.

Maybe I am too serious about it but I think that if this is something you study with sincerity then you should show it a little more respect than using it as a fun thing to play dress up with. If you are not that serious then maybe go ahead. I think it depends on how you view it. I for one would not. BTW My new son is going to be a baked potato for halloween. Awesome.

Well, you see, although I do take kendo really insanely seriously, I think it's time my friends from school got to see my uniform [No, the bogu doesn't smell yet, because although I have it, I'm not allowed to wear it to practice yet. School also doesn't allow alcohol [I'm a highschooler o_O] and masks are a big no-no for some odd reason.] In other words, I want to show off my kendo gear while the do is still shiny.

But I doubt I'll be going to trick-or-treat because of the fact that my friends all think they're too old to be dressing up. My attitude : "Hallowe'en is the one day you're allowed to be something you're not, except in my case, where I'm being something I am".

Anyway, I think I will wear it. Thank you all.

Thankyou Kendo, O blessed reason I'll never have to hurriedly fashion a hilariously shit Halloween costume ever again.

Since you're still new to kendo, you might want to be careful that your gi doesn't leave indigo stains in case you sit on a light-colored couch or lean against a light-colored wall.

Personally, I would not wear kendo gear for Halloween. For one, my bogu and gi smell. Second, most people I know already know that I practise kendo, so showing up in kendo gear would be the equivalent of a doctor (say) showing up in a white coat.

You never know, it might wind up a great opportunity to get some of your friends to join up. Be wary of "how hard can you get hit in that before it hurts?" though.

Oh man, that actually sounds like a plan. Never even thought of that. I've been trying to get my friends to join for a while now, some of them even considered it. This might actually push them into trying kendo.

Also, I have the "Non-shoaiozome-dyed" type stuff, because I'm a beginner. The real stuff is godly expensive, and I'm really poor. I was barely able to afford the bogu.

Like some of the above comments I have to wonder if wearing kendo gear is either a bit too demeaning or a bit too lazy. But, on the assumption you're going to do it anyway...

Sometimes Japanese period films are not above using parts of modern day bogu as samurai armor. It looks similar enough and only those who care about the differences (i.e. kendoka and yoroi otaku) would notice it's incorrect. So why not skip the men, kote and tare, wear everything else and throw on some tabi and a haori (traditional over garment) and go as a samurai? This way if your bogu does stink the worst offenders are left at home (assuming you washed your gi and hakama) and you're not going as kendoka but as samurai. You'll have to check on whether it's ok to go around with a "weapon" so maybe find a plastic katana as a safe stand in (and don't wave it at anyone lest you get shot).

Here's an example of shinsengumi depicted wearing dou

See, this is why I would recommend against wearing bogu. All it takes is some dick spilling cola on it... If your heart's set on it, though.

I'd say just wear it if you want to. Some people take things way too seriously sometimes, and something like that just seems incredibly minor.

I agree.

And in the end, you paid for it, you do what you bloody well want with it. :P

How different would that be from going in a kimono? It's not really Hallowe'en-y...

I went trick-or-treating until frosh year in college (that was the last year I went, because I was home for break) and if they gave out candy in the dorms I'd so do it. You're never too old for free candy and general tomfoolery.
