Default Miao Dao 苗刀 videos and such
just found out about this sword form. this form uses a very long single edged two handed sword.

what i found fascinating is that some of the teachers use shinai to teach and at least in at least one of the videos, they wear kendo bogu with the naginata calf protector (the form seems to have lot of strikes to the legs) to compete against each other. and at least one of the matches seem to be against a kendo dude-albeit not a good one.

the video has forms that i can recognize from korean bon-gook style, which KKA and also HGDG practices in a very loosely recreated version (from pictures in ancient text)...fascinating

here are some miaodao vs kendoka matches. It looks like the miaodao guys are using bogu and both players are wearing tsuneate. They have 3 judges but Im not sure what their scoring criteria is.

hate those kinds of videos because it serves no purpose
it's like saying "kendo follows rules. XYZ doesn't follow rules. Let's put the two together to see who 'wins'.."

now.. yyou take some miao dao backyard ninjer wanna be and say, "you must execute proper posture and 'create an opportunity', etc., it's not enough to kill but to kill with grace and elegance" .... well, once you can define how a miao dao dude is supposed to do that, then that might be something else.

...otherwise, i think it should be a valid point if the kenshi whips out a shoto and throws it at the ninjer. ... if it pokes the guy anywhere, that's a point for the kenshi.

Every third strike by the MD guy against the Kendoka was to the lower leg, and every one of his swings was massive!

Its poor fencing practice, but low cuts have a real attraction to a certain type of person, so you always see them turning up in this kind of informal sparring.

It would be highly amusing to see him trying those leg cuts against a naginata. I imagine that the guy would wind up getting his head pounded constantly.

I actually tried the spiraling motion the miao dao guy used for his guard and had reasonably good results. Once in a while I converted it into a maki otoshi.

It was fun but not something i will use all the time.
