Default Artists who are Martial?
Hmmmm, helping out on an iai coaching course today and a discussion came up about the types of people who studied various budo and had an 'arty' flair.

The percentage of people in the room who did something creative for a living or in their spare time was extremely high - so I thought I'd ask here!

Q1 - what is your (main) martial art study?
Q2 - are you artistic?
Q3 - if 'yes', in what capacity?

...and with that, I shall answer first.

Q1 - kenjutsu and iai
Q2 - yes, very
Q3 - professional architectural and technical illustrator, plus I draw (and occasionally sculpt) in my free time.

Life drawing, furniture design, concept art, portraits.

Media used: pencil, pastels, pen/ink/wash, airbrush.

Anyone else?

1. koryu naginata
2. yes
3. Once upon a time I drew and painted. Currently I sew, write, and work wood. As I seem to do a decent job making wooden weapons, I'm apparently a martial art artist. I've come full circle.

How artsy counts? I can play a couple of musical instruments and generally enjoy music, theatre and dance as a spectator. I've also managed to spawn a very artsy kid somehow which has dragged me more into this stuff.

1 - Iaido & Jodo
2 - Not really

But in our dojo we have a "similar" pattern. At least 50% of the people who practice there (maybe up to 60%) are "computer people", meaning they have a academic background in computer science or similar.

Since we are very few here in Portugal I think this pattern can be attributed to the way people found us, through word of mouth basically. Nowadays we are watching the pattern become less and less evident.

Regarding the "artsy" type, we do have some in our dojo, mainly photographers (that I know of) but not a percentage large enough to infer a pattern.

I think most IT people are frustrated "Artists". I dropped art to do more Academic subjects for A - Levels (Not saying art isn't academic but in the UK that's how it's seen by admissions).

so:

1). Batto

2) yes (Mostly a doodler in meetings nowadays) - also a top notch piss artist.

3). IT

1: UFK (Ultimate Fighting Kendo)

2: errr... depends who you ask. I like the stuff I do...

3: used to make (little) money from calling myself a photographer, now I just take pics for my work (at Tozando/Miyako Kendogu) and of my kids... Also, as doing JSA is no longer a matter of survival for anyone, I honestly think that practicing them counts as art, particularly as they are 'judged' largely on their aesthetics...

Q1 - Kenco
Q2 - I dabble
Q3 - I'm a designer [not kitchen or interior] supposed to be information design but it swings to graphics, web and multi-media. I can draw a bit but I'm very lazy so hardly ever do more than cartooning, which requires a lot of effort for me to get right.

Recently I've been helping my son in his Games Workshop interest, fueled by my own childhood addiction. That's manifested itself in painting angry aliens by the dozen, which I'm better than average at.

Q3: I enjoy photography and when I actually get time creative writing. I've had stuff published for both.

But the way I deal with problem solving and work is very logical rather than creative.

Interesting thread. I think most people would say they are 'artistic' wouldn't they, because the alternative is rather bleak?

Q1- Iai
Q2 -I don't think I am, but others do
Q3 - Music- guitar, synthesizers, sequencers (Berlin School of Electronica), bit of harpsichord.

Iaido.

Yes.

I spend most of my other free time dancing - mainly lindy hop and salsa but with smattering of other dances too.
I also work as a sysadmin which may not sound all that artistic but any good sysadmin will tell you that it's definitely much more a creative job than a scientific one.

1. Iaido
2. . . . . ish
3. Not in my job, but I still enjoy sticking models together and paiting them - 40k and WFB although I used to do historical. Not really arty but close.

Q1 - what is your (main) martial art study?

Q3 - if 'yes', in what capacity? 1) Kendo
2) Depends who you ask (I like to think so)
3) Not professionally.

Studied painting, printmaking, photography, sculpture, and video in art school.
Soon discovered "starving artist" is a very literal description and not so romantic.

Haven't picked up a brush in years, but still do photography in my limited spare time.

OK, here's the rub, I think music has more to do with mathematics than say the visual arts.
