Discussion paper has been up for awhile now...interested if any one has a comment.
I know some of the leagues are considering introducing a points system to reduce the number of "travelling" players a club can have. On one hand some clubs will struggle with numbers but others have spend big and had success over a number of years. This does affect the WAFL as we may not have as many players leaving to go to the country leaving WAFL clubs short of reserves players. The discussion paper has some interesting stats. http://www.wafootball.com.au/country...-points-system |

A points system is a very good way to even out a competition where some clubs have a huge advantage financially over others. Classic example is this year SD went hard after Leon Davis who would have gone to Swans but they could not fit him in their points cap. Davis would have cost any other WAFL club 14 points but cost Perth just 1 point because he was originally from Perth. The best thing that has happened to the WAFL in the past 20 years i reckon.
Not sure how it will work in country footy, it might be a bit harder to work out a points value for a player that is not that well known or played much WAFL/AFL. |

Has worked well in the WAFL for sure. Something had to be done & any way of encouraging former AFL players to go to their original club is a good thing. Sometimes it doesnt work that way but the points system allows it to be streamlined that way predominently.
Country footy is a whole different thing and I am not sure of why they would have one. I wasnt aware it would be needed, but most of us city folk are not that closely associated with country footy to know. |
