True macs I know what you mean. Club Logo, cut and paste of the Gains and Losses from here, a brief few words from each coach and a ladder prediction from each of the distinguished panel of experts thrown in for a bit of a laugh. Oh, and don't forget the white space but don't complain, 16 pages is still 16 pages.
![]() Who knows they might surprise us this year! If previous years are any guide, I'm not holding my breath. |

If previous years are any guide, I'm not holding my breath. But at least the West put up something. I reckon the WAFL will take anything that can get the comp in the paper.... It still gets people thinking about local footy, even if its only for a while. And its the only time we ever get a WAFL fixture card. Unlike years ago when every business in Perth had WAFL fixture cards. Anyway it gets the juices flowing.... Footy is on our doorstep and we are all looking forward to the opening bounce. |

I made the rare decision to see what you were talking about on FG SFFC4ever... I was suprised someone in the media would get into a slanging match with posters over there. Considering the portion of people on there, and the amount of people who actually follow the WAFL - The opinions on FG make up less than half a percent of the entire WAFL football supporters. Based on that why would he get his back up and condone an entire competition this way, when thousands of other fans who dont post on websites probably appreciate the lift-out greatly.
For him to openly say the boss of the West Couldnt care less about the WAFL and they are considering dropping any WAFL coverage because its "all too hard" is an astounding remark from someone in a proffessional feild. The WAFL is always classed by a level standard incorrectly as it is wrongly compared with the AFL... And it should not be. If people in the media were making popularity comparisons this way, then the A-League (Glory) should then be marked up against the EPL. And that would (by Townsends way) make soccer lucky to make it to a Primary School paper. Same with baseball (Heat) and Basketball (Wildcats) compared against their aligned counterparts in Major League Baseball and NBA Basketsball in the USA. These other sports here in WA by this comparison are laughable to anyone outside of Australia, yet we have a newspaper writer making threats against a suburban based competition that more than holds its own against these National codes. How many suburban based competitions can get 25,000 people to its Grand Final... Geez even Swans & East Perth got nearly 12,000 to the last game at Bassendean Oval, which is DOUBLE what Perth Glory get to one of their games lately. I for one understand the context of sport. But the WAFL should be compared to other suburban sports, not National ones. And even with that theory, the WAFL more than holds its own even up against these media favoured National sports. And that is credit to a competition that was phenomenal before it was raped, and still has a pulse. And despite all of this, still holds its own with very little corporate, media or government help.... Totally unlike these made up National sporting franchises who start with a bang, and before long are constantly talking about massive financial troubles (A-League, NBL, Baseball, State Cricket etc etc) even though they pull crap attendances by comparison, and get media attention by the gallon. It is a form of tokanism where our paper and TV media outlets follow National codes because they are simply that.... National. The WAFL has a phenomenal following given the massive brick walls it has hit, and it was compounded ten-fold when West Coast & Fremantle pressured the AFL into playing Saturday Afternoon games in Perth opposed to the WAFL. In which it "still" survives. And I suggest to Townsend have a look at the ABC TV figures and see how well viewed WAFL football is in this state. People still talk about that WAFL Grand Final last year as it was pound for pound the most exilerating sporting match played in this state for years. And this from a bunch of working class footballers, not over-priced primadonnas who waltz around Perth like they are something special. Get a reality check. |

Make no mistake Gas, I appreciated the lift out, it was just the fact it was unnecessarily hard to get hold of!
I & others on FG & now inc u guys are just dumbfounded by the response by this person @ the West. I wonder if his boss knows what he’s been posting???? I doubt it & seriously think its, as you say, a reporter (we all know who) has got his back up because of negative, but certainly justified, comments about the paper he works for.... Really is unbelievable that they could have someone so unprofessional acting working there...??? |

Geoff Christian was a staunch WAFL man with impecable integrity. I can only imagine what he would think if he was alive today to see this type of thing.... He was a realist who understood the demand for AFL, and that is 100% justified. But he also knew of the importance of the WAFL in terms of its importance to the overall structure of football in Western Australia. And its niche in the sporting market, which as a media ambassador he understood. He always took his proffessional responsibilities seriously and covered his sporting net far & wide because he appreciated the grass roots and how without it, elite sports become second rate.
To publicly spite the WAFL because of website discussions is ludicrous. In every walk of life we all get criticised in certain ways by individuals. You learn to take these things with a grain of salt because you are never going to please everyone. It is impossible. And we all get our back up when our opinion is challenged agressively. He obviously absorbs all of it and blasts back with statements that only deteoriate his standing. As a proffessional, if he has the time to respond that way, why not respond with factual reply's. He will then have a much more respected following, and in the end give the readers better feedback... Isnt that what a journalist is supposed to achieve with their line of occupation ? I cannot work out how baiting or getting sucked into cheap meaningless debates is going to benefit him... And Im sure he said the WAFL liftout made the West $50,000 ? ... Why talk it down in that case. |
