Default best season WAFL in awhile
Well now that the countdown to footy season is well an truly underway; I was thinking that given the recruiting that has taken place at every WAFL club including Peel that 2011 shapes as the closest WAFL season in decades. This is despite retriements and the drafting of players into the AFL its seems from all information posted in the gains & losses blog on WAFLONLINE that the quality & depth of sides across the league has certianly increased & that the talent base is spread more evenly then it has been in previous years.

Maybe its just me but to coin a phrase used by Bruce (at least i think it was coined by him) i'm excited and can't wait for that first bounce down at Basso.

I think you are spot on Slab, i've been thinking the same way. I reckon the WAFC have been run off their feet in the off season with all the player transfers that have taken place and there might be a few more yet. I'm waiting for confirmation on a couple of players that might be headed Perth's way. I think supporters of every club can go into the 2011 season with a reasonable amount of optimism and hope. In Perth's case, I hope it's not a case of another season of disappointment and under achievement. Not long to go now with scratchies starting in a couple of weeks.

Good post slab although I think Peel are still in for another shocking year.

Perth actually have a very strong side on paper IMO, the strongest in about 10-15 years. If they can't give the top 4 a shake this year then they never will. They made the right move by going for a coach who has the runs on the board when it comes to developing young guys, instead of simply going for a big name coach.

I agree with all of these posts, and I realise its a bit cliche to say this will be the closest season for a while etc etc...

But the reality is there has been some great recruitments and a few key swaps that will hopefully enable lower ranked clubs from last year to press harder for a finals berth. And the WAFL has had the past two seasons go down to the final round, so that in itself shows that the competition gap is closing slightly. I would say the points system has helped to a degree and it is really up to clubs to balance themselves rather than just buy up big. Though that is still a factor in enticing certain players.

Cannot wait for that opening bounce down at Basso between EP & SD.... Hunter,Hanson & Geappen up forward for Swans, with Prior, Smith and Pettifer up forward for the Royals..... BRING IT ON !!!

yep i'm begin fan of the points system and it will eventually even the comp out and each side will need to be more selective. The salary cap is a joke and we all know how that is rorted by clubs.

looking forward to round 1 and hopefully another bumper crowd for a great day

How do you think your boys will go against Old Easts SFFC4ever ??

Souths had the wood on them for a long time, but the Sharkies towelled you blokes up all the way last year. The Foundation day Derby they really took you to the sword & the last one they pretty much ended your season in a great game at Moss Street.

I would imagine the Freo derbies will have something in them this year too...
