This is the first in a series that will discuss the complete history of the Immigration Restriction Bill. In this episode we take a look at the period from 1840 to 1880 so that we can get a good understanding of why our first Prime Minister Edmund Barton introduced the Immigration Restriction Bill to parliament in August 1901. The topics covered include the end of transportation, the gold rush days of the 1850’s and 60’s, the coolie labour days of the 1840’s and 1870’s, and the reasons why the Australian colonies took the very first steps towards federation. The Voice - The Immigration Restriction Bill (Part One) 1840 to 1880 Duration - 50 minutes 33 seconds File Size - 11.5mb Recording Date - September 30, 2008. |
