Interesting play for a rental situation. If true, the Magic would be crazy not to take this deal.
Rockets get: Dwight Howard Jason Richardson and his contract Chris Duhon and his contract Glen Davis and his contract Magic gets: Kevin Martin Patrick Patterson Marcus Morris Chandler Parsons Jeremy Lamb Royce White Terrence Jones Multiple 1st round picks, including a future lottery pick from Toronto The Rockets would also then have to cut Shaun Livingston, Courtney Fortson, Josh Harrellson, Jerome Jordan, Jon Leuer, Diamon Simpson and Greg Smith. Pretty big roster shakeup for both teams, in this case. Orlando would have Turkoglu, Nelson, Kevin Martin, Q, Reddick, and the rest of the roster would be promising rookies and 2nd year players, and a whole lot of cap space going into the next year when Martin walks. Houston gets Howard, but is surrounding him with mediocre guys from the Magic and, what, Donatas Motiejunas and Jon Brockman? The Rockets are banking on being able to change Howard's mind about re-upping with them, but they will have a hard sell with the roster they are putting around him. They'd really need Chris Paul to jump over from the Clippers to really have a shot at keeping Howard. And then they wouldn't have a bunch of young players or draft picks to rebuild with..so it's a big gamble for the Rockets, but it should be a no brainer for Orlando. |

doesnt seem to smart by Houston The problem comes from being horribly bad with picks only every other year. Getting rid of next year's pick probably is a good idea, though. They should convey that pick with no protection whatsoever. The Magic, on the other hand, would have a talented young roster this year, cap room to improve it further the very next year, and a bunch of first rounders to augment with as well, either via trade or using the picks. Just looking at what they would have this year... PF: Andrew Nicholson, Patrick Patterson, Marcus Morris, Royce White, Terrence Jones, Gustavo Ayon, Earl Clark SF Hedo Turkoglu, Royce White, Terrence Jones, Chandler Parsons, Quentin Richardson C Gustavo Ayon, Kyle O'Quinn, Justin Harper PG Jameer Nelson SG Kevin Martin, Jeremy Lamb, Quentin Richardson There is some talent there, although light at center and point guard. Center could be fixed if the mythical Fran Vazquez shows up. Point guard is less of a concern because Royce White and Hedo can run the point from the forward position as well, but they would have the cap room and the surplus of bigs up front to make a trade for Calderon if they wanted to. He's due $10 mil this year, but his contract is up after that. Seriously, if Houston has made this offer, I'd question the Magic's new GM for not jumping on it right away. The Hawks could offer Horford and Teague and some picks, which would give the Magic a better player, but it wouldn't give them the bevy of young talent and clear up as much cap room, and the picks wouldn't be as good either. Really, Atlanta should just sit and wait. Let Houston make this trade, and compete with Dallas and Houston for Howard next year. By not trading Teague and Horford, they'd have the advantage of having more talent to surround him with, one of his best buds in Josh Smith, and of course being where he's from...Well, actually, they'd have to trade Horford in that scenario anyway, to clear up cap room to re-sign Smith. But they could get a haul of young players AND Howard that way. |
