First they trade two useful, cheap players(Collison and Jones) for a decent backup center(Mahinmi).

Which on the surface only looks a little lopsided, but Mahinmi was a free agent, and the Pacers were under the cap--they could've acquired him without trading away anyone.

Today the Bobcats were able to sign Ramon Sessions, so they pulled their qualifying offer to Augustin. The Pacers jumped in and signed him, paying him more to be their backup than they would've paid Collison.
