I've discovered this was untrue. Well, Laettner was the second weakest part. But Stockton was a nonfactor, and Magic and Bird weren't huge contributors, either.

Looks like Pippen was the best "point guard" for the team. Mullin was actually the 4th leading scorer, behind Barkley, Jordan, and Malone.
Can you imagine the looks Mullin was getting with those guys on the team, not to mention Magic?

you can either run and jump or you can't. technology and nutrition have next to nothing to do with it.
People aren't running faster nowadays?

I'm not sure what that has to do with the talent on the current team being better than the talent on a team that did, in fact, beat the Dream Team.

It could happen. Probably not a series win, but one game? Who knows.
yeah because that team was full of stiffs like penny hardaway, chris webber, bobby hurley, and grant hill. i mean honestly how many guys on the current team are even as talented as penny, hill, and webber? not many.

and there's also the fact that jordan hardly played in that game.

I don' think there will ever be another team as good as the Dream Team. Any team that starts with Jordan, Magic, Bird will be tough to beat. Then you throw in Malone, Stockton, Barkley, Pippen, Ewing, Robinson, Drexler, Mullin. All 11 of them Hall of Famers. Laettner probably never should have been on the team but I think they felt the need to have one college player. I don't even really know who is on the team this year but I would bet by the time they all finish their carreers there will not be 11 Hall or Famers.
I think the centers are really the biggest difference talent wise.

I think the 1992 team seems so much better because the country was far more in love with the NBA in the Jordan/Bird/Magic days than it is now. The 2012 team would likely be far more athletic overall.

It isn't even close. Only Kobe, KD, Lebron and CP3 would have a chance of getting on that team. And the front court comparison isn't even close.

The PG's on this current team would absolutely destroy the then 30 and 32 year old Stockton and Magic.

The C's and PF's of 92 would destroy this years team.

It's not as ridiculous a statement as it is being made out to be. But I'd still pick the Dream Team in a 7-game series to win 4-2.
Absolutely.
Or even 4-1.

Default 2012 vs. The Dream Team
I laughed watching Kobe trying to make a case yesterday.

Ill be brief... I have my concerns about this years team beating Spain let alone being an imaginary match for a game that will never take place..

Smart basketball fans know what would happen..

Because of advancements in technology, nutrition, etc., athletes are faster and stronger in general as time goes by. There are some guys from 1992 who are going to be as athletic as the best from 2012, but 20 years of advancement is going to make a difference. Same as the NBA players from 1992 are going to be bigger, faster, and stronger as a whole than the guys from 1972.
thats great if we are talking about offensive lineman, power lifters or plow horses, but we arent. none of those necessarily makes you a better basketball player.

The current roster could definitely give them a run for their money -- but I don't think they'd win.

Still, you put Russell Westbrook, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, and Blake Griffin on a court together, they're going to be tough to beat just based on pure athleticism.

And shoot, I left Kevin Durant off that list.

not that it matters, but bosh, davis and gay aren't on the team.
Whatever site I'm looking at must not have been the final roster. I thought it looked like way too many players. And yeah, none of those guys really mattered -- except maybe Bosh.

it's not even whatever injury he has now. he's old. not to mention the 92 team had jordan, pippen, barkley, malone, robinson, ewing, and stockton in their prime years. what does this team have lebron, melo, and maybe paul.
Durant.

what is this athleticism stuff? we're talking about jordan, pippen, malone, barkley, robinson, drexler here. these guys lack in athleticism compared to who?

Oh, you're talking about Pippen and Jordan? Silly me.

LeBron, Chandler, Iguodala, Paul, among others, are all great defenders.
I laughed like Jordan.

LeBron, Durant, Kobe, and Paul--more talented.
Deron Williams, Carmelo, and Love- as talented.

The current team is not full of stiffs, either, ashey. One game could come down to approach and how the teams were used. If the Dream Team wanted to play Bird and Magic for serious minutes, I think the current squad could take advantage.

I think the real question, though...Who wins between the Dream Team and Dream Team II?

Athleticism had nothing to do with it? Ok.
Kwame Brown was really athletic too...

Most of these ballers today dont have the mental game or the off court drive. But whatever, I can see where youre going.

what do all of these hypotheticals of alternative players have to do with the fact that Kobe's statement is still ridiculous? well, not if x, y, and z were there. not if kobe was 8 years younger, not if...

but hey maybe if they play a short scrimmage, because that's the same as a game. well, they're coming back knew it was going to happen, 'alright that's all for today' Daly.
