Default Possible Big Problem For the NBA?
NBA Head Coaching.

Possibly the most volatile job position in all of sports right now.

It appears that only veteran coaches with a track record of success get any sort of leeway, and if they DO get fired, they aren't unemployed long.

Phil Jackson. Larry Brown. Rick Adelman. Jerry Sloan. Pat Riley. Don Nelson.

When these guys finally retire, we're left with Greg Popovich, who would have to be dragged kicking and screaming from the Spurs, and the likes of Flip Saunders, Mike Brown, Avery Johnson, Mike Dunleavy, Mike D'Antoni, George Karl and the revolving door of other coaches. A pretty steep step down from the other guys, other than Popovich.

Where are the hot up and coming coaching prospects?

Coaches from the college ranks have been horrid ing the NBA in recent years. Assistant coaches with no prior coaching experience? Just as bad.

So teams are turning to retreads. But there are only so many quality retreads available. And they usually have about a year to figure things out before they are recycled again.

The good coaches are getting older, and there aren't any guys that I see growing into a Hall of Fame caliber coach out there right now to replace them when they are gone.

Bah....Noise news....Victories breed good coaching...Once a coach or two inherits a decent squad that runs of a couple good years, we have good coaches again.

SOMEBODY has to win...thus.......

Just eliminate the position.

Hire somebody to make sure they get to the games and don't punch anybody.

Call them facilitators.

Its the NBA.

IMHO they(players) do pretty much what they want to do 90% of the time anyways.

A coach is just a figure head if you have a good team. If you suck, they are the scapegoat.

Are you someone who thinks that Mike Woodson is a good coach?

I'm not talking about coaches who can win with good players, I'm talking about good coaches who can make a team better once they are hired.

The Rockets, once Rick gets fired, if history serves as an example.

Sam Mitchell winning COY was laughable.

The Golden State Warriors and Miami Heat would beg to differ.

I don't know, I would have thought more asst. coaches would have gotten more opportunities at being a head coach before a college head coach.

I mean I know he's ancient, but how long has Tex Winter been a asst. coach? I'm starting to hear small rumblings about Terry Porter maybe looking into a head coaching position.

I'm undecided, what about some olympic coaches from other countries?
