NORWICH, Conn. -- Former NBA All-Star Vin Baker, whose 14-year NBA career was marred by bouts of depression and alcoholism, was charged early Tuesday with drunken driving after leaving a casino.
Baker

The 35-year-old Baker was spotted driving erratically after leaving Foxwoods Resort Casino, according to a state police report. He failed a sobriety test and was charged with driving while impaired.
State police spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance described Baker's demeanor as cooperative.
A four-time All-Star forward who attended the University of Hartford, Baker averaged 15.0 points and 7.4 rebounds in the NBA.
The 6-foot-11 forward was a member of the gold medal-winning Olympic team in 2000 and enjoyed his best seasons with Milwaukee and Seattle.
Baker's alcoholism forced the Boston Celtics to cut him midway through the 2003-04 season. He later admitted drinking in his hotel room after playing poorly and showing up to practice with alcohol on his breath.
He also played for New York, Houston and the Los Angeles Clippers before being released by Minnesota six games into the 2006-07 season.
Baker was released on $500 bond and was due in court June 26.

At the beginning it's a choice, but at the end it sure as hell isn't. At the end, there's nothing to like about drinking. At the end it's an extremely physical addiction.

it takes people over, many lives have been ruined...my uncle cant shake it and he even has seizures which he cant mix his medication and booze, he's figured out the bare minimum med's he can take to "control" his seizures and still drink...he doesnt have it to an exact science yet.

the good news is he no longer drinks inside the house, he now "hides" it by drinking in the garage or his old beat up camper

ironic that someone named 'hoooooraybeer' has no sympathy for an alcoholic.

You are incorrect.

Real alcoholics lost the power of choice

It is difficult to understand for a "Normal" person.

The physical allergy ONLY occurs when i put alcohol in my body.

Then the phenomenma of craving kicks in....

The mental obsession however is a wicked bad thing or can be,

Once the spiritual malady is overcome one can easily RECOVER from alcoholism.

You and Ryno said it best, after time the brain begins to act differently and you can't control your impulses once you begin. I drink and am able to control it, but am very aware of the effects of continued "mis"use as its part of what i study...

Both very well put, and Hoooray has no idea what hes talking about

It's as simple as some people HAVE the allergy and some others don't.

And then there are the people who can cross the line...

There was never a line for me.
