Story:



Set in London, Desi Boyz as the title suggests, revolves around two friends Jignesh a.k.a Jerry (Akshay) a security guard and Nick (John) a banker. Life is like a bed roses for these two Desi Boyz as Nick can afford a lavish living for them, which also, makes him a reliable life partner for fiancée Radhika (Deepika). But, hell breaks loose as recession hits and they lose their respective jobs. But, it’s more miserable for Jerry as he is unable to take the responsibility of his nephew (Veer), the son of is late sister and brother-in-law, who eventually goes to a foster home. Post a regressive job search and in order to get Veer back in Jerry’s life, the duo turn into male escorts. Now, how will Radhika react to Nick’s reality, will Veer come back to Jerry’s life and how will Chitrangada’s character -Tanya spring up is the rest of the story.



Story Treatment:

A shaky first half with a plot losing threads most of the times, Desi Boyz picks up post interval with a much needed pace. Barring Akshay Kumar, rest of the characters in the movie fall prey to poor characterisation. A confused Nick, is irritatingly shown to be always in two minds. Nevertheless, the perfect comic-timing between with Akshay-John, followed by sexiest ever chemistry between Akshay-Chitrangada makes Desi Boyz a spicy watch. What adds glee to this ‘desi tadka’ is Sanjay Dutt, who at times, does overshadow the leads with his ultra-powerful performance.



Star Cast:

Akshay Kumar is back with the bang. He beautifully switches lanes from being an ultra-jovial to a sensitive guy. John Abraham springs up a surprise, as he is able to match up Akshay’s comic sensibilities. Thankfully, John is no more a stone faced actor, Deepika seems okay and she ends up winning quite a few hearts with her dimple-cheeked smile. Chitrangada Singh is a treat to watch, although adding some more dimensions to her character could have been a winner. Sanjay Dutt brightens up the screen with his hilarious act. Ditto for Anupam Kher and Omi Vaidya.



Direction:

Rohit Dhawan, as a debutant director looks very promising. He is poles-apart from his father director David Dhawan as far as filmmaking is concerned. He doesn’t waste time in jumping from one plot to another with perfection, which is a rare quality and can't even be spotted in veteran filmmakers. He is in complete sync with his cinematographer, as the camera moves do most of the talking for the film.

Music/ Cinematography/ Dialogues/Editing:

Music is rocking with title song Desi Boyz and party number Tu Mera Hero being complete winners. Cinematography, as mentioned earlier is worth noticing with some impressive angles which speak volume about emotions the director wants to depict. Dialogues complement the situations given in the movie. Editing is quite innovative with remarkable graphics.



3 Ups and 3 Downs:

Honest performances, groovy music, fast-paced screenplay and great cinematography get a thumps up. A weak storyline, poor characterisation and a clumsy first half are the weak points.



On the whole, Desi Boyz is surely a one-time watch with Sanjay Dutt’s presence being the USP of the film.

'Desi Boyz' stars Akshay Kumar and John Abraham as Jerry and Nick, best friends in London who lose their jobs when recession hits. Broke and desperate, they sign up to be male escorts – because naturally that's the only job still available during a financial meltdown!

As bird-brained an idea as this may be, at least it promises not to be a prudish affair. But hell, no! Debut director Rohit Dhawan picks an unconventional premise, but doesn't have the courage to run with it. So our hustler heroes – renamed Rocco and Hunter – might be happy to strip down to their shorts and shake their bon-bons suggestively at bachelorette parties, but bankrupt or not, their 'Indian values' are very much in place, hence sex is not on the menu. (Believe it or not, women pay 400 pounds to these guys for playing cards with them and chatting with them through the night!) Also, Jerry and Nick become escorts not because they're lazy or have too much pride to do menial jobs (both of which are true, by the way), but because one has to raise an orphaned nephew, and the other has a high-maintenance fiancee demanding a fancy wedding. Poor things!
Despite this blatant hypocrisy, 'Desi Boyz' coasts along harmlessly through its first half, with a few clever dialogues thrown in, and some pleasant chemistry between its male leads. Whoever came up with the terrific idea of giving the boys a kind of telepathic connection where they communicate without words, deserves a pat on the back. Alas, it's an idea that's abandoned halfway through the film.
Also abandoned at the halfway mark, is any pretence that this was trying to be a different film. Post intermission 'Desi Boyz' becomes yet another regular 'family entertainer'. Nick's fiancée (Deepika Padukone) breaks up with him after a video of their naughty dance moves goes viral, and child welfare hands over Jerry's nephew to a foster family. To win back his girl, Nick moves into a caravan that he parks in her driveway and woos her relentlessly; meanwhile Jerry decides to complete college and find a respectable job so he might convince the court that he can be a responsible guardian. Luckily for Jerry, he gets to mix up his studies with fun when he encounters a sexy Economics professor (Chitrangada Singh) who offers to tutor him strip-poker style.
The film's idea of entertainment is some Namasatey London-style jingoistic patriotism, a smattering of homophobic jokes, some unintentionally comical lectures on love and forgiveness, and a far-too-long climatic courtroom scene that ends on an embarrassingly regressive note.
'Desi Boyz' borrows scenes from 'The Full Monty', 'Back To School', and 'Fight Club' even, but at its heart it's not very different from Sajid Khan's similarly unremarkable 'Heyy Babyy'. Akshay Kumar and John Abraham perform earnestly and get a few moments to shine, but the gorgeous Deepika Padukone gets none. The greatest disservice, however, is done to Chitrangada Singh. Clothed in fancy designer togs, buried under pancake, and saddled with a thankless part, the actress is robbed of her smoldering presence, and homogenized into the mould of a typical Bollywood starlet.
Yet, the film isn't unwatchable. Pritam's soundtrack has some winning tunes, and the musical numbers are shot deliciously. What fails 'Desi Boyz' in the end is that it's such a generic, indifferent film. Rohit Dhawan leaves no directorial imprint for a first-time filmmaker, and there's little in this movie that you haven't seen before.
I'm going with two out of five for 'Desi Boyz'. Go in with modest expectations and perhaps you won't come out dissatisfied.

Nick (John Abraham) and Jerry (Akshay Kumar) are best buddies who share the same home, both of them being victims of the global recession in UK are left jobless. Both the buddies have load on their shoulders, with Jerry taking care of his nephew and Nick has to maintain a high-end girlfriend Radhika (Deepika Padukone).

They are in desperate need of a job and it is then when the duo meet Sanjay Dutt who gives them a job as male escorts in his company, Desi Boyz with one rule set: “No sex”.

There after, life becomes easy for all. The nephew is happy as all his expenditure is taken care off and Radhika is content too.. However, later on, she learns about Jerry and Nick’s nocturnal activities, when their real profile pops up on Youtube..

Nick and Radhika break up, nephew is sent to a foster home, and Jerry is chased out off Nick’s home, to complete his graduation.

Enters Tanya (Chitrangada Singh) who play a ‘sexy professor’. She is also Jerry’s love interest.

The chemistry between John Abraham and Akshay Kumar sets the whole mood of the film. The two, once again leaves the audience in splits, after GARAM MASALA.

Deepika Padukone, needless to mention, is superb through out the film, Chitrangada manages to impress in her brief role while Sanju baba rocks.

Pritam’s music is awesome and the title song, Desi Boyz, has already become a chartbuster.

Finally, Rohit Dhawan, the director of the film, has done a brilliant job.
