continuing on Venki's post on PC..he is director's dream..the above video is an classic example of using shadows..in this case it is used to depict thiruttu kalyanam. Don't think Mani would have had this in the script.
compare this to Shaad Ali's Saathiya where it gets lost in translation. DOP(Anil Mehta) opts for a typical milieu for the wedding which completely misses the point. |

Among the new guys, Kathir has been really impressive. His selection of shots and lighting style are very interesting. The long takes in Subramaniapuram (the establishing shot shown with Ganjakaruppu walking the streets of the town, and the scene involving Sasi’s murder) are beautifully conceived and executed. Katradhu Thamizh, too, had some brilliant camera work.

I think one of the best cinematographer is the one that's not screaming for attention. Shekar Kapur's Elizabeth got this criticism when it came out. The lighter cameras the easier lighting made any other films that came these days to be commented, "Awesome cinematography". I am thinking the days of yore, when camera was cumbersome heavy. Watch Tappu Talanggal, poor K.B,, couldn't afford the steadicam, and you can actually see the gigantic b/w cam lugged by the cameraman captured on shadow during one of its "gritty life on street" scenes.
Likewise, the POV shoot in Gouvaram, at one point I think the camera actually fell sideways . I bow to these early pioneers. |
