Just stumbled on this link - that calls Rajkumar, Vishnuvarthan also as "doctors" - so this phenomenon is not unique to TN

I was thinking Doctorate given only for doctors. Then I learned its also given to people who did extra ordinary job in their respective fields. I beleive only Sivaji & Kamal are eligible for that award in cine field. Have they got that award? May be Rahman and ilayaraja are good candidates.

Rahman was offered a doctorate by a foreign university, but he humbly declined that offer.

But isn't Ilayaraja already a doctor?

Ilaiyaraja's doctorate is from University of Arizona for philosophy in music or something like that.

I never heard anyone got from Eelam, that I know of. May be people get award, and I don't know of.
