IMO, Had he directed those movies with even a new face, those would 've remained tolerable to a certain extent. I still feel that he can make a strong comeback in direction. Let us see

I know I'm going to be criticized for saying this..

When Vijay started his career and (roughly) until poove unakkaga, he and his dad (who directed most of his movies until then) relied mostly on Sanghavi, Swathi, Yuvaraani and other heroines in their movies. Who would have thought that the same Vijay would be called a heir to super star in few years.

Time will tell if SJS is a good actor or not.

FYI, SJS is not my favourite actor.
