Do you think it is a good thing to introduce my kids to Buddhism or should I wait for me to have a better knowledge of the Buddha's teaching before I bring them into it ? My kids are pretty bright and as far as I know Buddhism, it seems like it's nothing intellectual, it's more like something that talks to your sensibility, and I believe my children could help me understand it even better. I've seen this Thich Nath Hanh book called The Stone Boy and Other Stories and I believe it is just short stories. Maybe I could buy it to my kids, I thought it might be a good way to start. I've made a search on Google and it looks like teenagers are more and more interested in Buddhism http://www.teenbar.net/showthread.ph...ung-for-Buddha

You could always learn about Buddhism together with your kids and I recommend Buddhanet's Buddhist studies learning facility http://www.buddhanet.net/e-learning/index.htm My personal opinion is that I think it would be a good idea for you and your kids to get a general overview of Buddhism and the Buddha's core teaching first, before focusing exclusively on one person's view of them. |

I was once a teenage Buddhist in the not so distant past. My initial interest in Buddhism developed in my early teens and flourished throughout the latter part. For me, this was an excellent time in life to begin learning about and practicing Buddhism because it was when I began to really think for myself and find my own path.
The teen years are a period of discovery. They hold a lot of potential for personal growth. Exploring Buddhism with your kids sounds like an opportunity for all of you to learn something new. As long as your approach stays away from any form of indoctrination and starts with the basics, sharing Buddhism with your children could be a wonderful experience. Thich Nhat Hanh's The Stone Boy and Other Stories is a great book for kids and adults alike. It provides a clear glimpse at Vietnamese culture and universal themes like compassion. TNH's style is poetic and appropriate for all ages. Whether you start with this collection of stories or another text, please enjoy it together as a family. |
