Default Insence cones
Ok so, random and possibly dumb question... But today I got some Sai Incense cones for myself and my counselor (who is also a Buddhist) for meditation and such... I was just wondering, how exactly are you supposed to use them? The first one I used was called Patchouli, and I thought that maybe it was just that certain scent that was why it only smelled musky and smoky. But I just tried a rose one and it did exactly the same thing. They smell good in the boxes, don't get me wrong. But once I light them I smell nothing but smoke for the rest of the day... can someone help please?

Hi BatteredRose,

I tried some time along incense. And like you, there was just the smell of smoke similar to that of dry grass when it burns. It is about preferences.

It is not needed to achieve a good meditative session.

The only smoky smell I tolerate is the scent of myrrh.

Hi Rose

Its not necessary to burn incense, especially the very smoky cones. Its possible that a room full of incense smoke could be just as bad for one's health as a room full of cigarette smoke, especially for people who have asthma.

There's certainly no need to use it for meditation -- personally I prefer to meditate outside or next to an open window when possible anyway.

with kind wishes

Aloka

I like myrrh too .... also have pleasant association with a Tibetan incense which is a blend of Amber Scotch Pine, Sandalwood, Clary Sage and aromatic Himalayan Herbs - I don't burn it at home though.

Hi Battered Rose,

I'm not a great fan of incense cones either. Have you thought of using an oil burner instead?

Hi Rose

I'm told that the quality of incense differs greatly, and that Japanese incense is particularly good, without being overpowering. A quick Google brought this up:

http://www.thejapaneseshop.co.uk/cat...anese-Incense/

But as others state, it's not necessary for meditation.
