I've been doing Buddhanet's Metta meditation for a while now and something strange happened today. I was reading a crime story on the website of a local newspaper. They allow pople to comment on stories and there is usually a lot of very right wing comments on such stories. I was reading some of the hostile comments towards the young man involved in the crime and instead of feeling angry at them the same feelings I get while doing Metta meditation rose up inside me. It didn't last that long and wasn't very strong, but it was a wonderful experience. It was nice to feel Metta towards people whose opinions I don't agree with. I think I'll have to put a bit more effort into this practice.

Hello LT,
I don't know if this is a correct approach to metta but it helps me. I have found useful to differentiate between the action and the person. The actions can be wholesome or unwholesome and those are the ones that can make me mad, but when it is about the person, then, there are no hard feelings to be found. |
