Default immolation
I read recently about a monk in Tibet who set himself on fire in order to protest the condition of their treatment under the chinese. A group of Chinese soldiers beat him with batons instead of pooring water on him or using a blaket or something to put him out. While I do (I think) see the connection to non-attatchment, but I still can't get past the 'suicide' aspect of the monks act. While the incident I and refering too happen not too long ago, I have also heard of the more famous time back in the 70's or 60's I think. Rage Against the Machine has the image as an album cover. Can anyone shed more light on the ideas behind the practice? Why do that? What is it called? Etc. Any help in this area would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
