It is too old to be shipped into the country. Cars over 5 years old were allowed in if they paid a penalty, but they have currently discontinued that practice. For a more in depth report see my thread and experience on shipping a vehicle last year. I am not sure how to link it here, so do a search under my username.

but the post I want to refer to (and cannot figure out how to post a link to here) was titled Buying a car/Shipping a car/My experience posted in August of last year. It was literally a step by step process with my costs.

Contact TheHun for shipping expenses info. If you come using the exemption for Dominicans returning to the island or foreigners who wish to move here you can get a big exemption. I talked with Zee (TheHun) last night and he told me he only paid US7000 for the import taxes for his suv that was valued at US29k.

Your best bet would be to sell that low slung car anyway and get a good used suv like a mitsubishi or toyota. Just make sure it has a real chassis. Most cars here outside of the capital se desbarata de una vez, ya tu sabes.

Yes, that is the truth. And it was with a 60% discount for residents. Beside that I have also paid US$ 3000 for the registration. The car is a 2005 Toyota 4Runner.
Unfortunately your car is over 5 years old.
One more thing, the car has to be on your name least a year and you need to have at least a "pending" residency status. That means you turned in all your documents to the immigration and they gave you a receipt with a bunch of stamps on it and this has to be presented at the custom dept./Aduanas.
I was told, if you are a returning dominican citizen you will not have to pay your taxes, but the registration has to be paid.
