MEXICO CITY: Alexander Rossi of the US won the Formula BMW world title, beating local favourite Esteban Gutierrez of Mexico in a close race at the Autodromo Rodriguez circuit in Mexico City on Sunday.

The race was the culmination of the 2008 season that consisted of races in Europe, America and the Asia-Pacific.
Rossi, who races for Eurointernational, started in fourth place on the grid and struggled for the first couple of laps after which he found himself one place down. However, the 17- year-old suddenly got into the groove and started challenging leaders Gutierrez and Michael Christensen of Denmark.

As a reward for winning the title, Rossi will get a chance to test the BMW Formula One car next year. Rossi said he was really excited at the prospect of testing a F1 car. “It has always been my dream to be behind the wheels of a F1 car,” he remarked.
