The name Simon Taylor springs to mind, but I can't be sure.

It's not Simon Taylor - I think he did the earlier reviews. He's on this video about 3 minutes in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6FDohXyw8F4.

Don't know who the commentator in that Monaco video is but thanks for the great link anyway

I think it's Bob Constanduros, or however his surname was spelt. Used to be the English-language circuit commentator at F1 races.

Ben Edwards has done the offical reviews in recent years, but I know the voice you are referring to, he also did the Mansell in Indycar voiceovers (the interviews in those being conducted by a young James Allen), can't for the life of me remember his name.

The best F1 reviews were 1982, 1984 & 1986 for one simple reason - Clive James - he has real enthusiasm for the sport and a very dry wit, and he came up with these corkers for the 1982 season "Some people say Long Beach is like Monaco, minus the casino, history, arcitecture, glamour and the close proximity of France" and "Monaco is like Long Beach, minus the Queen Mary but plus everything else!".

The worst - mmm, 1983 had some annoying American woman interupting regularly, 1988 had a poorly rehersed script but for sheer annoyingness I think 2000 takes the biscuit, the commentary was just plain irritating and completely failed to capture the fantastic atmosphere of a brilliant season, I still have a couple of the race broadcasts from ITV in 2000 (including the title decider) which are a much much better way of viewing the season - the combo of Murray Walker & Martin Brundle just plain worked, you always got the feeling after Murray retired that Brundle despised James Allen!!

Warning: I'm doing this purely from memory and I aint watched them for a few years...

Matt Lorenzo and ... not sure did 1990

Simon Taylor and ... again not sure did 1991

Steve Rider did 1992.

Jonathan Woss of "Russell Brand ****ged your grand-daughter" fame did 1993.

That's as far as my collection goes.

And yeah, Clive James owns the hell out of the lot of them!

As for 1983, yes, annoying doesn't even begin to cover it, horrible sound quality as well so the actual proper guy doing the commentary could barely be heard anyway, and THEN you had the annoying American woman shouting over the top!

I agree about Clive James. An unusual choice, but witty about F1 in a way no-one else has ever managed.
