I find it most interesting that, running in 2009 spec, Massa was very quick. This suggests that the grooved tyres require so much more downforce in the corners - justifying all the apendages - that when they are all removed and slicks bolted on, the corner speed is probably similar, but straight line speed with uncluttered aero is much faster.

That could be right, and the slick tyres probably give so much more mechanical grip through the corners, even without all the little appendages. I bet the slicks give the driver more confidence to push the car. You're probably right about slightly higher straight line speeds.
Will the rev limit remain the same next year? I think it should be increased so that the guys have something to work with when they get a slipstream. it will be interesting to see whether or not the cars are easier to run behind with less downforce. |
