Default Lady Gaga Covers NME Magazine (April 2011)
A few new images from an article and interview Lady Gaga gave to NME just leaked. The first page of the article has been floating around, but the rest has yet to show up. I've spoilered them for size.

I love the outfit!

I've read some quotes from this interview here and there and it seems like a pretty testy interview.

"I feel I have been probed endlessly about who the f--- I am," she continues. "I have been quite open about it. And still nobody seems to have a clue."

This rubs me the wrong way. It's just confusing. What is she even talking about? What is there to be upset about? Open about what? She is heavily made up and wears fantastical outfits with bones jutting out of her forehead, but then thinks it's odd that people ask who the person is behind it all? Hello! Of course she doesn't really have those bones or wake up in a meat dress. It's like she is willfully being difficult and creating some sort of drama where there is none. I don't get it at all. Does she want people to just say " Lady Gaga DOES have bones jutting out of her face. She was BORN that way!" and actually believe it or something?

Ugh. I'm sounding like an idiot now just talking about it.

I think that she's irritated that most of us haven't accepted her persona as who she really is - we accept it as just that, a "persona".

I agree. I think what she often references is that people don't understand that Lady Gaga is Stefani Germanotta and vice versa; she always gets asked about the real person behind Lady Gaga, and that's probably what bothers her the most. I think it's less about questioning her decisions and motives when choosing the meat dress, for instance, but more a general misunderstanding and belief that Lady Gaga and Stefani are two completely different people. I mean, I'm sure there are some slight differences, but I can sort of see how being constantly poked and prodded about the "real you", when you've been showing the real you to the world for quite some time, can become aggravating; perhaps she feels invalidated that people question her identity.

I can see that, but of course people are going to assume that she is not Lady Gaga all the time. The very fact that she has a stage name makes one assume that there is a difference to her.

I have to laugh, because as I was typing, I remembered that Tori Amos makes a distinction between Tori and "Tori". Now that's confusing. Lol.

She addresses, straight on, the "Express Yourself" criticism!

http://i.imgur.com/ifARY.jpg

RE: Born This Way / Express Yourself

A bit of it does sound quite a lot like 'Express Yourself,' though, doesn't it?
I don't think... I swear to you. I am not stupid enough to put out a record and be that moronic.

The reference seemed so obvious that it had to be intentional because, as you say, you're not stupid...
No. Listen to me Why the fuck...? I'm a songwriter. I've written loads of music. Why would I try to put out a song and think I'm getting one over on everybody? That's retarded. What a completely ridiculous thing to even question me about. I will look you in your eyes and tell you that I am not dumb enough or moronic enough not to see that I would have stolen a melody. if you put the songs next to each other, side by side, the only similarities are the chord progression. It's same one that's been in disco music for the last 50 years. Just because I'm the first fucking artist in 25 years to think of putting it on Top 40 radio, it doesn't mean I'm a plagiarist, it means I'm fucking smart. Sorry."

The criticism did seem to take the wind out of the song's sails.
There's a lot of people who want to see me fail. The minute they see something to shoot at, they shoot, and the bigger I become the bigger target I am. Nobody in this room at any point looked around and said, 'Oh my God, it's 'Express Yourself.' Not once. Listen, I swear to you. I can only be honest with you about it.

What will people say about 'Judas'?
I dunno...I think they will really love it (starting to well up) I just don't want my fans...I don't know. This is exhausting. I just don't wanna perpetuate that shit. I'm sure you want to address it but it's just so ridiculous. I was fucking shellshcoked by it. It's so funny to hear you say, 'It must have been an homage', I'm like, NO. Wen I homage, I fucking homage with a big sign saying I've done it. Why would I not do that now? I need a fucking drink now. (Sighs) I just like.... I just have to say... (starts crying) I feel like honestly that God sent me those lyrics and that melody. When you feel a message to give to the world and people are shooting arrows through it... there's no way for something that pure to be wrong. (Reaches for Marilyn Monroe lighter) I need a cigarette."

I haven't read the whole thing, but just from the quotes - she sounds exhausted and bored with the interview questions.

ETA: aw! I feel so bad about her reaction to the Express Yourself question! I'll admit - I couldn't NOT hear it when it first came out, but now I don't hear it at all. Also, I think people also confuse the spoken word in Vogue with Express Yourself when really - its two different songs.

Wow. I feel badly for her, but I really can't believe no one heard EY in BTW. Actually, they probably did but were too afraid to bring it up. So yeah, I believe her, but I bet she feels really dumb for not hearing the obvious. But whatever, that single did amazingly well, so good job.

Wow, she's usually so well-spoken, but here she just sounds really angry and childish. I do sympathize with her, and it saddens me to see her so tired and upset, but I wish she could have handled it a bit better. "That's retarded" is something I'd expect from a high-school girl, not her.

I can hear parts of Express Yourself's instrumental in BTW at the end, it sounds identical. I think GaGa is a huge Madonna fan and grew up wanting to be like her and it's what she's doing. There's nothing wrong with it but it's time to admit it Gaga.

I agree with this. I wish she hadn't lost her cool in the interview, even if I don't blame her for feeling any of the ways she's feeling.

It doesn't sound like her at all. I think she's showing signs of burn-out. She seems pretty angry at the moment about some people's reaction to BTW.

I think she probably thought she had written a truly amazing, anthemic song that was going to be something of a signature for her - and then when it came out, the generally mixed reaction was probably a big surprise and disappointment for her.

Reminds me a bit of Tori who seemed really up and excited about ADP but the reaction wasn't overwhelmingly positive. And then in one of the later doll blogs as one of the characters she wrote about this art project or something that people didn't "get" and how disappointing it was (which I always took to be Tori writing about ADP.)

Oh come on, she's that quirky? I think I'd question her sanity if she jumped in a giant egg to take a trip to the supermarket.

And who really knows completely who they are at 25, anyway...

Her statement reads: "I consider it part of my life's work and music to push the boundaries of love and acceptance. My apologies for not speaking thoughtfully. To anyone that was hurt, please know that it was furiously unintentional."
It continued: "An honest mistake requires honesty to make. Whether life's disabilities, left you outcast bullied or teased, rejoice and love yourself today."
