Our New Year
Lyrics: Glasses raised we all say ‘Cheers’ Could this be the one? Our new year Even after all this time I don’t know why, why you went away Lately I’m sure it’s you there waving in the distance, closer. The closer I get… Disappointment tears. Yes it tears They just have the same color of your hair you’re not there, you’re not there, you’re not there Every corner that I turn I’ve convinced myself one day you’ll be there Choruses of ‘Auld Lang Syne’ Could this be the year? yours and mine Lately I’m sure it’s you there waving in the distance, closer. The closer I get… Disappointment tears. Yes it tears They just have the same color of your hair You’re not there. You’re not there. You’re not there You’re not there. You’re not there. You’re not there You’re not there. You’re not there. Glasses raised we all say ‘Cheers’ Could this be the one? This could be the one Could this be the one? Our New Year I loved this song from first listen. It's one of my favorite Tori songs ever and was a great finish to an inconsistent decade. It has some of Shenale's finest work. The way the strings rise and back off really give it such a sad mood. I do wonder how this song would sound live solo, how much of its punch is the orchestration. I can't listen to this song at a reasonable volume. I need it loud. It envelopes me and it just soars. It also makes me cry most of the time. If I sing along, even if I think I'm feeling fine, my voice catches on “They just have the same color of your hair.” So sad. I think it's pretty clear that this is about her brother, how at the holidays she's gathered around with her extended family and wonders if this could be the year it might not bother her as much. Then she sees his kids and all they do is remind her of him, “even after all this time.” I feel so terrible for her that there is so much pain. So it's not a cryptic “WTF is she talking about?” song. And when people talk about the decline in her music, it's hard to agree 100% with this incredibly awesome song coming out in 2009. The one live performance: Link to a rip of the radio broadcast If NOH has one song that is half as awesome as ONY, I'll be pretty happy. |
