Default Which came first?
It seems that there are only two basic possibilities for "Which came first?"

1) Matter spawned consciousness... that is consciousness is a natural evolution of the material world.. Matter existed first.

2) Consciousness created matter... that is matter is a dream, or the matrix that we live in.. but Consciousness existed in the 'void'

Personally, I subscribe to #2 (although earlier in my life, I believed #1). What changed my mind was a long series of events which showed me that there are things which exist outside of the material world described by science.

One big one was Pamela Reynolds' brain surgery, where all the blood was removed from her body. Cooled to 60 degrees, and with all brain waves ceased, surgeons repaired bad blood vessels in her brain. When she was revived (a miracle in itself), she could remember all the details of her surgery, as an observer to the 3 hour operation.

So, which do you believe and why?

I said #2, as I believe that the Grandfather created everything. I believe that the sheer diversity of everything just doesn't lend itself to the pure chance of certain atoms coming together with certain other atoms, sometimes in the hundreds of trillions, in a particular order, to produce the things we see. Shamanically, I also know that there are spirit realms which lie outside of, and are not governed by, science of the physical realm. To me, there are simply way too many things that cannot be explained by the first option.

This may sound odd coming from a pagan, but I was watching a program about the black Pharoahs and how they used very much the same language as the book of John, something along the lines of "the first was the word and the word was with God"

or.. one could compare it to the Greek Theophony, the story of Gaia who dreamed then woke and the world was formed from her awaking and her copulation with the Void.

anyway, consciousness first then matter

Letters are Spirit made into form (something like that, it was a saying I used to have hanging in my home )

It is said in my spiritual tradition that the Supreme Reality is Sat (Pure Being) Chit (Pure Consciousness) Ananda (Pure Joy). It is said that Sat-Chit-Ananda is "everlasting, complete, without beginning or end; It is one, indivisible Being." I strongly believe that Consciousness has always existed and will never cease to be. Our material universe is supported by Sat-Chit-Ananda. Consciousness is the Creator.

I'm choosing #1. We are all made from star matter and the matter from those stars came from stars before them. The seeds of Consciousness was created in the stellar forges of the universe. Thought is a form of energy and matter & energy are inextricably intertwined, hence matter must come before consciousness. And if not, perhaps they have existed together in harmony much like yin/yang. I wish there was a third choice, after digressing.
