Default Only Hindus is a compassionate religion
THE Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) has declared its opposition to euthanasia, stating that it is 'tantamount to the act of killing'.
Its head of the Mufti office, Ustaz Nazirudin Mohd Nasir, said: 'Regardless of one's illness, and however sick one is, he or she shall not be killed because of desperation and loss of hope of recovery.

'Even with the consent or request of the patient, it is regarded as suicide and aggression against the other.'

Muis quoted a verse from the Islam holy book, the Quran, pointing to this prohibition: 'Nor kill (or destroy) yourselves, for verily, Allah hath been to you most merciful!'

Muis is the latest religious body here to take a public stand against mercy killing.

The head of the Catholic Church here, Archbishop Nicholas Chia, made a public condemnation of it on Sunday; this was followed on Wednesday by a statement in the same vein from the National Council of Churches of Singapore, which gathers 200 Christian churches and organisations under its umbrella.

In its statement, the church council came out staunchly against all forms of passive and active euthanasia, ranging from the denial of treatment, food and water to the administration of a lethal injection.

Buddhist and Taoist teachings also advocate respect for life and frown on euthanasia, their respective religious leaders have said.

The Hindus are the only group that sees the act as acceptable under certain circumstances.

Could it be because there's more to salvage for dowry from the dead person's coffers?

Cheers!

how can killing someone be compassionate? you want to do it?
When one reach a state of suffering in pain all days and bedridden the only thing you see is the wall..you love one have to change ur diaper and seeing you moaning in pain day and night..mercy kiiling is the best thing if you want to live with dignity..

The slippery slope starts with the AMD and sugar coated words of easing pain and suffering of 'loved' ones (relatives impatient to lay their hands on the cash assets being whittled away by medical care) leads to Euthanasia and before long the retarded and burdensome who needs diaper changing gets euthanised.

Who is there to guarantee then that the next group; old and economically burdensome or IQ deficient (dementia, Alzheimer's etc) won't be 'pressurised' to be euthanised?
Voluntary Euthanasia soon becomes COMPULSORY EUTHANASIA imposed by the STRONG majority on the weak, helpless, voiceless minority.

With a ONE PARTY state and a behind the throne puppet master like LKY who is strong proponent of EUGENICS coupled with a yes men cabinet and a rubber stamp parliament, S'pore would soon be a VERY DANGEROUS place for the old and infirmed.

Terminal diseases may be untreatable but Medicine is very advanced in palliative care especially towards alleviation of pain control. Allowing euthanasia would put a damper on future research on palliative care and pain control.

kiwibird7, i think you have a point there

the denial of medicine is already being practised in the case of severely illed patients, with the permission of the deeply distraught next of kin

'deeply distraught' because in addition to the grief, there is also the fear of hospital charges and the cost of further treatment to prolong life

the alternative is for them to be discharged from the hospital and sent to a hospice or their own home

aiyah why talk about all these morbid things when everyone is so down and so depressed already.all these are side issues lah. when there is no food on the table, everyone will automatically choose death lah...die die lah...why so big deal...nothing to do with religion or religious belief lah...just look death squarely and welcome it with open arms...you cannot expect death to say hello and go away...look at if squarely and smile when it comes...no need for doctors to give you anything...don't depend on doctors for the decision to meet death...smile and go happily leaving nothing behind with no regrets and with no fears. right? good.
