Default Nick Cohen: our absurd obsession with Israel
Spot on, as always, Nick

http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisf...ct?INTCMP=SRCH

From news article:
Far from being a cause of the revolution, antagonism to Israel everywhere served the interests of oppressors. Europeans have no right to be surprised. Of all people, we ought to know from our experience of Nazism that antisemitism is a conspiracy theory about power, rather than a standard racist hatred of poor immigrants. Fascistic regimes reached for it when they sought to deny their own people liberty. The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, the forgery the far-right wing of the decaying tsarist regime issued in 1903 to convince Russians they should continue to obey the tsar's every command, denounces human rights and democracy as facades behind which the secret Jewish rulers of the world manipulated gullible gentiles.

Obsession with Israel was used for a long time to distract Arabs from the misrule, gross corruption and splendid wealth of the leaders. Hopefully, the hatred they taught will die with the regimes.

I doubt it will though, since Jew hatred is as old as the Phillistines, Amelkites and Jebusites.

I think not, it's the splendid wealth that kept the hatred of the leaders 'corrupt' in the eyes of the fundamentalists.
In the end they all end up as fat corrupt failures and therefore need to be kept in place to buy time until all resources are gone. I don't mind if Gaddafi wins although he's an old demon learning new tricks.

I think you misread my post. My point is not that the fundamentalists resent the wealth of the rulers. My point is that th erulers know that their wealth would cause envy in a reasonable person. Rather than have the flames of hatred lap at their feet they try to fan those flames against Israel and the West. Quite a manipulation.

In the end they all end up as fat corrupt failures and therefore need to be kept in place to buy time until all resources are gone. I don't mind if Gaddafi wins although he's an old demon learning new tricks.
Buying time is a matter of survival. The Saudis may provide Qadafi with an exile; they won't give him splendor. And his days as a tourist to nicer countries are certainly over, as soon as he's branded an international criminal.
