Default Lord Carlile: UK a safe haven for terrorists
http://hurryupharry.org/2011/02/03/l...or-terrorists/

The BBC reports:The UK has become a “safe haven” for foreign suspects, the outgoing terror laws watchdog has said.
In his last report, Lord Carlile said rulings from the European Court of Human Rights meant it was difficult to remove dangerous people.
He said the UK was relying on foreign states’ assurances about the treatment of suspects that judges may not accept.
He also said the political debate over replacing control orders had been “poorly informed” at times. The 2010 Centre for Social Cohesion report Islamist Terrorism: The British Connections notes:Al-Qaeda and al-Qaeda inspired terrorism remains the biggest threat to the UK’s national security. The Security Service estimates that over 2,000 people in the UK pose a terrorist threat and in March 2005 it was estimated that there were up to 200 al-Qaeda trained operatives in the UK. The British-based threat does not only affect the UK: a number of British Muslims have been convicted in foreign courts or have fought for (or trained with) terrorist or extreme Islamist groups abroad. This is a national disgrace. Why the hand-wringing?
In 2009, Marc Thiessen summed the problem up:We are in grave danger as a result of the fact that we are lowering our defences by doing away with vital tools in the war on terror that have proven successful – all in response to the hue and cry from the European Left and to appease European opinion.
